Standing a little away from Portland's bustling city center, Nostrana serves up honest regional Italian fare in a warm and welcoming setting. The restaurant's outdoor facade is fairly simple. Step in, and you'll be pleasantly surprised at what they've done with the place. Clean lines, lots of woods, ceiling mounted fans, large decorative plants and some great lighting choices give the place, a very charming feel. Choose from a limited, but well-crafted menu of regional Italian specialties made using the freshest local, seaso... read more

Well, the wine was good - wait, no, they overcharge on that – This is The Oregonian's restaurant of the year? Very disappointing! We were only given a short bar menu with a few wines and several expensive Champagnes, so ordered the lambrusco. Based on the Web site, this restaurant has extensive wine offerings, yet we were never offered a list of any. Moreover, we later found out we were charged nearly $2 more than the listed price for this bottle! Our server poured our wine only once the entire time: after she opened it. Our... read more
A great way to ruin a birthday. Nostrana hates kids... – The best way to put it is to say that Taco Bell has better food and better service than Nostrana. Our dining experience was a joke. The food was nasty and the sevice was horrible. The only way the Oregonian could have ranked this resturant #1 in Portland is if they had never ate there. I would have to guess that Nostrana just signed a year long advertising contract with the Oregonian, that is the ONLY way they could have ranked this OVER HYPED restaurant any higher tha... read more
Bottom Line: Don't waste your time – Portland is such an amazing food experience town - it's hard to go wrong at a restaurant - but I'm compelled to write about this one - nothing more than a chain like theme with marginal food and service that should infact receive the 2007 award for worst service of the year. Bad service is one thing - Nostrana is unique in that they provide no service. After all why bother with service when you've been named restaurant of the year!? Sat at the counter, which we always try to do at other r... read more
Disappointing - Nostrana – We had read good things about Nostrana in the Willamette Week Restaurant Guide so we were excited to try it. Even though there were numerous tables open when we arrived and we had called ahead to put our name on the list, it took quite a while for us to actually be seated. Once seated, we waited for almost 20 minutes before someone even acknowledged us to ask if we wanted drinks. I had pizza which was ok, nothing special, but my sister was very disappointed with her ravioli. She ended up eating my ... read more
Great food – Excellent pizzas, particularly the tartufo. The menu seems to change frequently. Everything I have had off the grill has been good. Great wine list. Try the vin santos for desert. Service is much better when the owner (Mark?) is there.
Glad We Live Nearby – I'm happy I hadn't read the reviews of Nostrana....if I had I might have missed out on one of the best dining experiences ever! My dinner companion and I had a difficult time deciding between all the interesting menu choices so we decided to do a few different items and share. We started with the porcini mushroom and artichoke appetizer. The mushroom was huge and as flavorful and succulent as a good steak! The artichoke was also a real taste treat. We then split a bowl of chestnut and white bean soup an... read more
Very bad service, food nothing special – As a former waitress, I tend to be very forgiving of bad service -- sometimes you just have a bad night. But this was offensively bad service and I will not give Nostrana another chance. We arrived and waited 5 minutes before the hostess arrived. We were seated and sat 10 minutes before we started to wonder what was up. The tables around us were parties of 4 -- we were two women. And I know how it works. The waiter looked at us and decided we weren't going to be ordering as much or le... read more
Maybe Nostrana is reading their reviews and taking notes... – I had decided to take a pass on Nostrana given the bad reviews, but I am so glad that a family member decided to celebrate their birthday there last Tuesday night. It was fairly busy, and we were a party of seven, but (much to my surprise) our server was extremely friendly and attentive. She was even very patient with the slightly tipsy and a bit high maintenance member of our party who was upset that they had run out of the pork loin chop. The only critiques I ha... read more
NOT the Best Restaurant of the Year – 1. Host staff ignored us when we walked through the door. We stood there for a long time before they acknowledged us. 2. The woodburning stove made the restaurant smell like a campsite. My hair and clothes smelled like smoke for hours after we left the restaurant and I had a horrible headache to boot. 3. The waiter was the most pretentious person I've ever seen - and I've been served by some high end servers over the years from Rome to Mexico. This guy was just the worst with his idiotic... read more
