About this business

Standing a little away from Portland's bustling city center, Nostrana serves up honest regional Italian fare in a warm and welcoming setting. The restaurant's outdoor facade is fairly simple. Step in, and you'll be pleasantly surprised at what they've done with the place. Clean lines, lots of woods, ceiling mounted fans, large decorative plants and some great lighting choices give the place, a very charming feel. Choose from a limited, but well-crafted menu of regional Italian specialties made using the freshest local, seaso... read more

Horrible service – Restaurant of the year!!! I'm shocked. First course: Italian cheese- it took about 20 minutes, seriously for cheese. Our server informed us that our toasted hazelnuts would be up shortly--which of course they never did- and then they were never mentioned again, nor did we ever receive them. Second course- Radichio ceaser salad--- great dressing horrible matching with the radichio. Third course- I ordered a baked homemade fettucini with ricotta and pesto. not baked ,no ricotta. Instead just boring $18 small... read more

The Most Appalling Dining Experience in Portland – I don't usually write reviews on Citysearch, but I felt compelled to express how disappointed I was with Nostrana. The service was poor, and once, one employee even replied, "that's not my job" when my guest asked if the woman could sign her name in on the wait list. Once we were finally seated, it took a long time for our waiter to show up, at which point, we were already starving. He asked to take drink orders and then realized that he had left us sitting without a drink m... read more

big disappointment – I brought out of town guest to this place, and they were so amazed that we were charged for bread in an Italian restaurant and that so many of the items on the limited menu were not available even at an early hour in the evening. We had to ask for our water glasses to be filled, we had to ask for a knife, we had to ask for more olive oil, and we had to ask for the cheque. Condensation from water glasses left water all over the table and was never wiped up. We were struck that there was absolutely no tabl... read more

Overrated, nice patio, below average food and service. – If you like paying for side bread, mediocre food, and shoddy service, Nostrana is fine. But whatever you do, don't question the chef's genius and request a substitution or an omission of any ingredient, like prosciutto if you're vegetarian, or nuts if you're allergic. Each item is absolutely essential! Unless of course the kitchen screws up your order and then tries to slip it by you. Then they will gladly substitute an entire side item on a gristly, fatty $25 steak. O... read more

The Bread is Fabulous...If You're Willing To Pay – I have never heard of paying for bread at an Italian restaurant - after all, bread is the lifeline of Italian culture. However, at $2.50 per plate, it is a delicious diversion from the slow waitstaff. The food is good - the pizza is delicious. However, the pork skewers were small and salty - not what I expected for $18. Oh, and make sure you're early - Nostrana does not take reservations under a party of six and they will not seat you until your entire party is present.

Chewy pizza crust – The service was mediocre and the pizza was impossible to cut with the dull knife...they gave us a pair of scissors instead. The dining room is open with huge ceilings. Beautiful but impossible to hold a conversation. We preferred to sit outside.

Excellent food; slow service – We (a party of three) arrived at 5:30 on a Sunday and were seated promptly. However, it took 15 minutes for our server to acknowledge our existence, but we remained patient and didn't complain. The restaurant was already more than half full at this point. Once she did engage us though, she was helpful, friendly, and knowledgable about the menu and the wine list. Overall though, the service was really slow and harried! Thankfully, we had plenty of good conversation to keep us occupied and once w... read more

Almost didn't go due to negative reviews; GLAD WE WENT! – Early Sunday Evening visit. Seated promptly, greeted warmly. Our server was excellent. She guided us through the wines and the menu, helpful but not pushy. The wine list has several little known treasures and some great values. A selection from the d'Abruzzo region surprised us with it's dry, clear flavor. The price was right and it was the perfect complement. The Pizza was very similar to what you will find in Northern Italy. WOW! The ingredients were the star, espec... read more

don't believe everything you read – we had a gift certificate, from my brother in LA no less. we decided to read some reviews and it didn't sound real positive, especially the service part. but, the meal was going to be free, we could order extra drinks, and maybe get through it :-) I did recognize Kathy's name having eaten at Genoa's several times in the past (decade?), so that was good. Hey, they have a parking lot! The waiters were very nice and helpful. Those bad reviews don't make sense. Kathy was busting her ..... behi... read more
