Nostrana

About this business

Standing a little away from Portland's bustling city center, Nostrana serves up honest regional Italian fare in a warm and welcoming setting. The restaurant's outdoor facade is fairly simple. Step in, and you'll be pleasantly surprised at what they've done with the place. Clean lines, lots of woods, ceiling mounted fans, large decorative plants and some great lighting choices give the place, a very charming feel. Choose from a limited, but well-crafted menu of regional Italian specialties made using the freshest local, seaso... read more

Great Place! – I have been to Nostrana on several occasions and I have always loved the food. Everything on the menu is really fresh and delicious. Sometimes the service has seemed "unfocused" but on recent visits I have noticed a huge improvement. Things just generally seem more organized and the servers have been much more attentive and helpful. It's often pretty busy so we just have a cocktail and chill out while we wait for a table. I absolutely recommend this place, especially when you want some simple and traditional I... read more

I don't understand the bad reviews – I finally went to Nostrana this afternoon after much prompting from a friend of mine. Granted my friend and I went for lunch, and so we didn't have to deal with the large crowds everyone seems to complain about. The food? Fantastic! The margarita pizza was superb, the radicchio salad was phenomenal and the chanterelle mushroom and cherry tomato bruschetta was amazing. Those complaining about small servings??? Well, yeah, perhaps if you are used to the over proportioned plates they serve y... read more

It was ok.... – We decided to try Nostrana last night - had heard some good things about the food. It was just ok. Husband had the zucchini soup and pepperoni pizza. The soup was tasty and the pizza was pretty much like the pizza I've enjoyed in Italy - very thin, crunchy crust and toppings spare, but very good. I had the pappardelle with a rabbit sugo and it was ok (shouldn't order things my Nonna used to cook - nothing stands up to her pasta), but the serving was VERY spare for $16. I had a side dish - stuffed zucchini - I... read more

Horrible customer service, slow, decent food – I've heard decent things about Nostrana and I was excited to try it out when I went with two friends last night. We were told there was a 20-25 minute wait, so we gave them our name and went to have a drink at the bar. 45 minutes later, they seemed surprised to see us still here. Instead of going out of their way to get us a table and make us feel welcome, they then told us it was still going to be a 25-30 minute wait. When I checked the list they had already seated 7 parties wh... read more

Just Fine – Went last night for a girls dinner, with one nine-month-old in tow. Staff handled the baby well. The atomsphere was light, noisy, the food was tasty but not overwhelmingly spectacular. We split some pizzas. They do not pre-cut the pizzas for you so it became a little messy as we attempted to gracefully portion them out. The entrees at adjacent tables looked deliciouis, with generous portions. Did have an enjoyable time but do not think this will come to mind the next time I'm thinking about a place to go.

Not worth the trouble – I had to laugh when I read all the poor reviews of their service. I applied and got an interview to be a waitperson at Nostrana. I have over ten years experience as a server and do a great job. The interview lasted about one minute. The extremely rude manager asked me one or two questions and dismissed me as if I wasn't worth his time to even be nice to. I guess they prefer young, cute servers to ones who actually know what they're doing. My dining experiences there have been similar. The second, and ... read more

Snooty. Subpar food. Big $$$. Trendy customers. And top it off with an insect floating in our cocktail - yummy! – If you want to spend $$$ in a massive dining hall atmosphere eating small portions of subpar food with insects in your drinks, this is the place for you. My daughter highly recommended Nostrana. We went in with high expectations, left knowing we would never come back. This is one of those restaurants that is about form, not function. Its about looking good, but we just could not find a good product. In fact, we l... read more

Honestly cannot believe this place hasn't gone under – Well my girlfriend and I decided to try Nostrana. It looked cute and a couple people told us to check it out. (Well a friend of a friend owns it) We put our names in and went across the street to crush to have a cocktail. Looking back we should have just stayed at crush and had a few more drinks before we ate because maybe it would have tasted better. She ordered the smoked salmon pasta with scallops. They were out of the scallops but she decided it would be fine to have... read more

not good for groups – Just okay - seems as if the restauranted wants to be high scale by the verbaige used on its menu, yet the food was so-so. Bland tomato sauce on pizza. Not good for groups - would not let us split the check. Drinks were very expensive - can't get a glass of wine under $8. Also, although we had a group of 8, and the total bill was more than $300, we were charges for additional bread (and not told about it ahead of time). You can easily get a better meal and better atmosphere somewhere else.
