Standing a little away from Portland's bustling city center, Nostrana serves up honest regional Italian fare in a warm and welcoming setting. The restaurant's outdoor facade is fairly simple. Step in, and you'll be pleasantly surprised at what they've done with the place. Clean lines, lots of woods, ceiling mounted fans, large decorative plants and some great lighting choices give the place, a very charming feel. Choose from a limited, but well-crafted menu of regional Italian specialties made using the freshest local, seaso... read more

Great dinner, fun experience – Two of my friends and I ate dinner ate Nostrana on Saturday night, and it was so excellent, from start to finish. The waitress sold us a bottle of Vino Nobile di Motepulciano, and was very informative and told an engaging story about the wine's history. We had the leek and mushroom sformato, which was amazing, as well as the caprese salad, the tartufo pizza, the spagettini with seafood and the lamb. For dessert we enjoyed the cheese plate and the biscotti with vin santo. Our table was at the ba... read more
We'll never go back – My wife and I ate at Nostrana in June and had a wonderful experience. So we were excited to share the restaurant with some good friends. The experience was the absolute opposite and goes down as one of the worst dining experiences of our lives. The food was well prepared. However, the service was terrible. There were six in our party. Two couples shared a salad and the other couple each ordered one of their own. When the four salads arrived, they were joined by two entree's. These sat untouched while we... read more
It used to be excellent...what happened? – A month ago, I had one of the BEST meals of my life at Nostrana. I dined with two other people and we moaned and fork-wrestled through the entire delectible meal. I had the absolute opposite experience last week. The pizza appetizer arrived at the table with a blackened crust. We ignored the obvious imperfection because we were confident that the taste would be so perfect that the crust wouldn't matter. We were wrong. The pizza had no flavor at all. We told the waiter and he took it... read more
Thoroughly enjoyable dining experience – My wife and I had a wonderful dinner at Nostrana recently. It was one of the those three hour meals that you don't want to end. We ordered one dish at a time and waited to see what our palette wanted next. We ended up ordering 6 dishes off the menu as well as a nice bottle of Italian wine. Everything we ordered was delicious! We had a cow cheese appetizer/salad with pickled cherries that my wife exclaimed, "this is one of the best salads I have ever had." The tuna skewers were wonderf... read more
Restaurant of the Year? No way – I can't believe this place was awarded anything here in Portland-- a city with an abundance of amazing restaurants. We went on a Sunday night (perhaps the JV crew was hitting that night?) and arrived early after being told they don't take reservations for parties of fewer than 6. No problem we thought, we were looking forward to a wonderful meal at a supposedly wonderful restaurant-- more time to enjoy. Our friends arrived 15 minutes earlier than us and were given a snotty "how LONG will they... read more
Outstanding meal, and great service – Having worked in the restaurant business for well over 20 years, with most of those being in fine dining establishments, it takes a lot to impress me. I was impressed with Nostrana. I had been once before, and it was good, but not memorable. Last night's meal was as good as I've had in Portland, and our server was on the money. The busser was attentive as well, always keeping our water glasses filled, and even refilling our dog's waterbowl regularly. The caprese salad was amazing, and th... read more
Even bad customer service would have been an improvement of NO customer service.... – We went to Nostrana last night for my b-day. Have been looking forward to it since it was named ROY. Disappointed??!! YES. We sat for 20 minutes before we finally got up to find a server to even acknowledge us--we were ready to walk out (note: we had to find one...they all seemed to walk by us as if we were invisible while serving everyone else around us that was seated later). They were out of our first 3 choices of food (flat iron steak, ... read more
One of my new favorites in this town – As a cook and a serious diner, I have gotten fairly jaded. Happily, Nostrana was a terrific surprise: Our soup of eggplant, chickpeas and mint was fantastic, and our onion, olive, and anchovy pizza was great. Even the dessert - a mascarpone and chocolate tart with orange sauce, was exciting and perfectly executed. Wonderful food.
Authentic Tuscan wood-fired cooking and a rustically elegant Italian Alpine setting lures the dolce vita crowd to the SE. – In Short The large outdoor firewood rack in the entrance is well-stocked to stoke the glowing fires of the pizza oven and rotisserie, both visible through the open kitchen. Hickory paneled pillars doubling as coat racks and a vaulted fir ceiling add to the alpine lodge esthetic. Well-heeled families and smartly dressed foursomes feast on specialties like prosciutto with grilled Bosc pears, chewy-crusted... read more
