Where solid soul food, B.Y.O.B. and a casual atmosphere meet on South Street. – In Short Wrought-iron candelabras and green glass votives give Ms. Tootsie's an artful elegance with neo-soul music completing an atmosphere of warmth and welcoming. There are no appetizers here: It's all entrees, all the time. Enormous portions of fried chicken and turkey chops--which, with their to-the-bone seasoning and melting juiciness, put all other eateries with aspirations to home-style to shame--come with sides like buttery cabbage, coll... read more
Great Fried Chicken – My first time at Ms. Tootsies....not so bad!!! I originally wanted to order the Fried Whiting, but they were out, so I chose the Talapia....which had no taste!!! Talapia, not seasoned at all....I also ordered the collard greens and candied yams....the collard greens were VERY GOOD and the yams were pretty good (just too much..too thick). The corn bread muffins were GREAT!! I tasted my boyfriends Fried Chicken...and it was SOOOO GOOOOD!!!! He also ordered the mac and cheese and cabbage, which were both p... read more
Wonderfully tasty food..^_^.. – Hi. I finally had the pleasure of ordering from the famous Ms.Tootsie's Soul Food Restaurant. I live in DE but work in PHL. The food looked and tasted fabulous. My concern is the space, the wait and where you must wait. I placed my food order at work. So right after work I went straight to Ms. Tootsie's to pick up my food. I noticed an older black couple was there and the woman had swollen ankles and a cane and the elderly man could barely stand. God bless them both. I think and truly believe ... read more
BEST SOULFOOD IN THE WORLD – Ms. tootsie's is the spot. They have the best soul food i have ever had. I had the catfish which was to die for, and the macaroni and cheese, which would melt in your mouth and collard greens, which would make you want to hurt somebody. The cornbread is also amazing. and they give you like a water bottle but it has ms.tootsie's name on it and they have the best tea ever. It is sweet and just to die for. I want to go all the time.
Still The Best! – Just came from Ms. T's RBL and ? no doubt ? still the best in the city! Chicken here is still my favorite. Small plate make sharing fun. And the parties they throw here are off the hook. Can't wait until next Party of the Year Nov. 3.
Best Soul Food in the City! – 4.26.07.I was visiting Ms. Tootsies Soul Food Cafe last week for Penn Relays. I am so glad I found this spot. The name says it all. A cozy cafe with the best soul food in the city. I had the sweet tea I heard about, and was instantly taken back to the lazy days of my childhood. Our table had such a variety of entrees, it is hard to pick my favorite. Fried Chicken and Catfish with; Cheesy Mac, Buttery Yams, Peppery Cabbage and cornbread! I wanted to curl up in the booth after a thick slice of Swe... read more
Not recommended, if you've tasted great soul food, you'll be disappointed – My husband and I live in Kansas City, MO and were in Philadelphia for vacation. We are always looking for a great soulfood restaurant and found Ms. Tootsie's and after seeing all the great reviews decided to try it. Boy were we disappointed! Maybe the other reviewers have not had good soul food because if they did they would know that Ms. Tootsie's is NOT it! First, it is in a back alley, the restaurant is about the size of a living room, so you're g... read more
Very warm atmosphere....I'm hooked!!! – Having moved to the city a few weeks ago one the first things that I did was seek out some authentic down south cooking to remind me of home and ease my transition from rural Georigia to Philly. Well I found it! At Ms. Tootsie's Soul Food Cafe on South Street. The ambience of the restaurant was very welcoming and my server Dominique went well out of her way to explain the menu, keep my glass of Southern style sweet tea brimming, and ensure that I had an all around enjoyable experience.... read more
Great Soul Food – This is a great restaurant if you are trying to impress your mate, friends, or family members. My friend and I drove from Maryland on two different occassion just to eat at Ms. Tootsie's. It is hard to find a good soul food restaurant in Baltimore, Maryland. The hour wait was okay with us because it was a nice summer night. Once we were seated the service was fast and great. I love the dim lights and hardwood floods as well as the color paintings. The ice tea is off the hook and the Mac and cheese and green... read more
