Ruby s Diner was established in 1980, after junior-high buddies Doug Cavanaugh and Ralph Kosmides renovated a dilapidated building on the end of Balboa Pier in Newport Beach, Calif. The 1940s-style restaurant, which was located in a former bait shop, became an immediate hit, taking in $600,000 in the first year. In the second year, sales exceeded $1 million. I’ve haven’t been to the Ruby’s Diner in Whittier for a long time because I’ve been quarantined in my house in Hermosa Beach because of the COVID-19 Virus. I’m doing an awesome job of taking care of myself and everyone I know by washing my hands with soap and water, drinking my fruit juice, using hand sanitizer when necessary, wearing my cowboy bandana when I go out in public and keeping 6’ft away from people.
