Ruby s Diner was established in 1980, after junior-high buddies Doug Cavanaugh and Ralph Kosmides renovated a dilapidated building on the end of Balboa Pier in Newport Beach, Calif. The 1940s-style restaurant, which was located in a former bait shop, became an immediate hit, taking in $600,000 in the first year. In the second year, sales exceeded $1 million. We always leave it up to my dad to decide what he wants to eat, so this time since my mom was making albondiga soup we decided on Ruby's since my sister was craving a banana split and he had the seafood plate. He loved it. Thank you , and the service was great.
