About this business

With the aim of addressing the stark absence of quality restaurants offering home-style food in the area, chef and owner Lisa Schroeder has taken the experience gained at the likes of Le Cirque to create wonderfully fresh, bistro-style cuisine in the light and airy ambiance of this old Irish bank building. Breakfast and lunch menus at Mother's Bistro & Bar offer an excellent array of Northwestern specialties prepared to the highest standards. There is more variation in the dinner menu, with everything from salads to pot roas... read more

Spectacular Crab Cake Sandwich! – After watching my share of "$40 a Day" where host Rachael Ray asks locals for their favorite restaurant tips, I was ready to do the same. As luck would have it, the flower girl near Starbucks pointed us to "Mother's Bar and Bistro." My boyfriend and I had lunch there on a weekday right around 2pm and it was just the right amount of slow. The food was AWESOME. I had the crab cake sandwich ($10) with fries ($1.50). It was a huge serving and incredibly delicious! Our waitress was extremely swee... read more

1st time – Greetings, My husband and I just were there for lunch today. We had heard many great things about this restaurant and wanted to try it. The food was wonderful, but the service was lackluster. We had originally ordered soda's with our lunch and we were not given them till after we got our check, we felt rushed the entire time and we were not given the service like the other patrons around us and for this we were disappointed. I hope that maybe you can make your staff aware of this for the future. Thank you,

will come back for more – friends suggested Mother's for dinner on a Friday night. coming in from out of town for the weekend, didn't know about this place, but do now. Impressive service, great, great food. Owner/chef was highly visible and helpful, server was very good. Liked the atmosphere, good bar menu as well. Enjoyed it so much, came back for breakfast the next morning, for the biscuits and gravy! This is truly a winner, and will be a stop each time I visit Portland

Nice Change – I am tired of the same ole breakfast spots. So we decided to head downtown to Mother's after hearing about this place for awhile. You aren't able to make same day reservations but the hostess told me to call ahead when we were on the road. We only waited about 5 mins. The service was a little slow but it was very busy. We had biscuits and gravy! YUM My son had the mac and cheese...he was very generous to give me a couple of noodles! I see why...it was really good. It's was a really nice breakfast and I can't wa... read more

Nice brunch – Make a reservation, we were seated right away on a busy Sunday morning. Variety was excellent, food was delicious. Nice selection of teas and homemade lemonade. Good quantity of food and affordable.

Amazing, Delightful, Delicious – Mother's is TRULY a Portland treat. If you are in the mood for AMAZING comfort food in a great atmosphere with wonderful service, please take a long Saturday evening and visit Mother's. Try the steak frite or pot roast for beef eaters, or the chicken 'n dumplings for the white meat eaters. Skip the creme brulee ... you won't have room anyway! You'll be glad you went!

Best in the West--Breakfast that is. – Here is my usual job schedule: two days in Vancouver, B.C., two days in Seattle, one day in Tacoma, two days in Porltand, Eugene, Medford, Redding, San Fran and then it starts all over again. Portland has two of my favorite places to eat. Mothers for breakfast, Mama Mia for Italian food. I think it fair then to say, in my opinion, they are the best of the West!

Darned good food – I came on to vote for best of Citysearch and decided to write a review. My office is a block from Mother's and on average I probably eat a breakfast, a lunch and a dinner there each week. It is my favorite restaurant in town. The service is fast at lunch but on a sunny day I call ahead, get it to go, and eat eat at the river. I love that the menu changes monthly with a new mom. The Thai specials they had last month made Mother's the best Thai food in town for that month! My favorites: Mexican chopped salad... read more
