About this business

With the aim of addressing the stark absence of quality restaurants offering home-style food in the area, chef and owner Lisa Schroeder has taken the experience gained at the likes of Le Cirque to create wonderfully fresh, bistro-style cuisine in the light and airy ambiance of this old Irish bank building. Breakfast and lunch menus at Mother's Bistro & Bar offer an excellent array of Northwestern specialties prepared to the highest standards. There is more variation in the dinner menu, with everything from salads to pot roas... read more

Mother's Bistro is Great – I recently brought a group of 31 people to Mother's Bistro for lunch and it was great! I must compliment them them; not only on the food, but also the friendly service. We had a space to our groups use, which is always a plus. I was throughly impressed and wanted to send them 31 thank yous!

Thanks for caring – This is a copy of a thank you note sent to Mother's on 5/17/08: I wanted to thank you, especially Margaret, for taking the time to help fulfill a Mother's Day wish of mine. My brother lives in Vermont, I live in Europe and my sister is there in Portland. It's difficult to show each other how much we love one another, especially with the distance-- we try to be creative when possible. My brother and I wanted to surprise my mom (who was visiting fro Michigan), brother-in-law and sister by paying for their b... read more

Not for small kids....not for anybody. – We choose this establishment because on the "quick review" it was noted that it was recomended for kids. We learned our lesson. READ ALL THE REVIEWS FIRST! Bad parking, a long wait, and minor annoyances can be overlooked and forgotten when the service is good and the food exceeds the expectation. This day continued downhill from the time we put our name in at the door and were told "this is not a good spot for a little one". Our grandson acted well mannered and had more patience with t... read more

Ridiculous – Good Luck if you try to eat at Mother's. We never made it past the host stand. The two host's were completely incapable and it was 11am on a Wednesday. I'd hate to see them on a busy Friday night. Having been in the "industry" myself I am always very understanding when I eat out. However, the lack of service we received was RIDICULOUS! They gave away our table, twice, and when I asked to speak to a manager they looked shocked. We wound up going to a great Greek place right around the corner. Avoid Mother's. If t... read more

Worst dining experience ever – My experience at Mother's was so awful that I am compelled to write my first ever review. Citisearch says this is a good restaurant for children - I couldn't disagree more. I made a reservation for the Saturday before Mother's Day so I could have a relaxing dinner with my husband and our 2 small children. When we arrived, we had to wait for a table, though there were many empty ones in the main dining room. Our son needed a diaper change so I went to the ladies room. I found a sign inside infor... read more

Fantastic experience...worth the wait! – This is my 3rd visit to Mother's - each time for breakfast. Fantastic food each and every time. Only once (during the week) did I not have to wait for a seat - but hey - this is Portland! ANY good breakfast spot has a line out the door - that's just how it is in Portland. And while you wait you can enjoy Stumptown coffee...can anyone tell me what could EVER be wrong with that? However, once you are seated all the waiting fades away. I haven't had the same wait person once, yet, while ... read more

VERY Disappointing – After reading the comments on this site and hearing reviews from many portlanders I finally made it out to Mother's. I was treated extremely rudely by the hostess who shot me a dirty look for trying to tell her that of my party of five, two were children. Then we get to our seat and for a place themed after mothers they sure seemed to ignore the only obvious mother in our section. With two small children we could have used just a little service. Great that they bring you crayons that you can fetch off th... read more

Great Breakfast – We went there for Easter brunch because I have heard such great things about them. It was super packed and so we did wait a little bit after our reservation for our table. But what do you expect for a holiday brunch? I got the biscuits and gravy. I thought it could have used some more sausage flavor. I also had their pork apple sausage, it was very good as well as their potatoes. My husband had their crunchy french toast and absoultly loved it. I have even tried to make it at home but theirs is a lot better... read more

Good Comfort Food for Breakfast – When a friend of mine comes in to town from San Francisco, we always go to Mother's. It is always crowded but that is the price you pay for good food. Their omelets are great and the breakfast menu is comfort food with a twist. They have excellent coffee too!
