With the aim of addressing the stark absence of quality restaurants offering home-style food in the area, chef and owner Lisa Schroeder has taken the experience gained at the likes of Le Cirque to create wonderfully fresh, bistro-style cuisine in the light and airy ambiance of this old Irish bank building. Breakfast and lunch menus at Mother's Bistro & Bar offer an excellent array of Northwestern specialties prepared to the highest standards. There is more variation in the dinner menu, with everything from salads to pot roas... read more

Rude & rushed hostess – I've been to Mother's three times & I honestly don't see what all the fuss is about. I never cease to be amazed at the line of people waiting to be mistreated by the host or hostess & to eat only average food for breakfast when I pass by on my way to somehwere friendlier. The last time I was there, it was for a friend's birthday brunch. Even though we had reservations, we were told we'd have to wait until the last two of our party of five arrived before we would be seated. As a matter of fact, the exa... read more
Long waits and poor estimates of wait time – Unreasonable wait. The host was very rude when we inquired how close were we to being seated and informed us that we had only waited 13 of the 20 minutes and that it would be 45 minutes to an hour before we saw a table. He said estimating the wait period is not a science. That's good because he sure as hell is not a scientist.
Not too sure the hype about b-fast, but we had a great expereince anyway! – Lisa Schroader (chef/owner) greeted us at our table, the service was great. I LOVE the decor, all of the mother/daughter photos are a nice touch. The breakfast is pretty ordinary. i mean, they have won local awards for breakfast and I just wasn't THAT impressed with the menu. I mean our breakfast tasted fine, but I guess I was expecting something special.
The Best Eggs Benedict! – Great ambiance sitting under sparkling chandeliers and lots of light we dined on great freshly squeezed OJ and the best egg's bene I've had in a while. The wait is long but the food is worth it. The seasoning on the potatoes was excellent. The owner even is gracious enough to out of the kitchen it great hot pepper pants and talk to the diners. wonderful feel, food and not that exepensive at all!! Parking is a challenge but the walk is worth it.
GREAT food.... BAD vibe with staff members – Despite the LONG wait for brunch, the food at Mothers is the BEST brunch in Portland. The problem is, OBVIOUS tension between staff members and especially staff members and the owner, is almost unbearable. We sat at the bar for brunch recently and watched the poor barista get reprimanded by the boss left and right while she was working her ass off... The staff then snap at each other because they don't seem to want to be the next victim of the manager's wrath. It's really too bad ... read more
Great Food & Service - Coming back for more! – Mother's was a great stop recently. We made reservations for 8 at 7pm in advance and showed up a few minutes early and our table was ready. Decor is light and airy - yellow and green. Service was excellent - Peter was our waiter and did a great job attending to us. Food was delicious all around; chicken and dumplings, pot roast, pork tenderloin, vegetarian green curry, mac & cheese, and stuffed bell peppers. They happily broke our checks out into 4 separate checks (4 is the limi... read more
great food! - poor service! – my husband and i thoroughly enjoyed our dinners, pot roast for him and greek lasagne for me. the roast and lasagne were absolutely perfect, however, our server, was slow to get our orders, slower to get our drinks refilled, and even slower in getting our check to us. it wasn't a particularly busy evening (Tuesday) or busy hour. our server, we noticed, was too busy to serve and rather busy socializing with the other wait staff. go for the food, but don't expect much in the way of service.
An homage to home cooking draws in the faithful at this bright, sunny space. – In Short Distressed off-white furniture, mother-themed art and press clips featuring the owner set the scene. Families and couples line up six deep for weekend brunch to sample eggs Benedict with hollandaise and migas--scrambled eggs, tortilla strips and chipotle sour cream. During lunch and dinner, a multiethnic comfort-food menu is bolstered by monthly specials featuring an honorary mother's recipes. Dinners offer meat loaf, steak frites and the... read more
Harsh owner, great food. – I recently took my own mother to Mother's for a weekday brunch and was shocked to hear how the owner spoke to her staff. She was pointed out to me by my own mother who had seen her in a magazine. We were both astonished by her behavior. On several occasions during the short time we were there we heard her berating her employees for the tiniest infraction. It was odd because our server was incredibly attentive and helpful. It just seemed sad that someone with so much success was treating those who o... read more
