About this business

With the aim of addressing the stark absence of quality restaurants offering home-style food in the area, chef and owner Lisa Schroeder has taken the experience gained at the likes of Le Cirque to create wonderfully fresh, bistro-style cuisine in the light and airy ambiance of this old Irish bank building. Breakfast and lunch menus at Mother's Bistro & Bar offer an excellent array of Northwestern specialties prepared to the highest standards. There is more variation in the dinner menu, with everything from salads to pot roas... read more

Wonderful Dinner – I don't know about the haters but my friends and I had a wonderful dinner experience here. In fact, I just got home from there! The food and service were fantastic. I had the grilled salmon which was very fresh and delicious. My friends had steak frites--not overly greasy--and the pot roast. Thumbs up all around. Our waiter was knowledgeable and made honest recommendations. I will definitely be back.

Pretty good. – I enjoyed the mac and cheese -- with emphasis on the cheese. I enjoyed the atmosphere and a darling waiter who was very helpful. The seating was disappointing ... we were stuck next to the door on a very cold day. I felt like I was too close to the couple next to us.

Chaos!! – My recent Sunday experience at Mother's was absolutely terrible. The server was disorganized, inattentive, and rude. The food came out in stages, instead of all at once. When the bill came, I was disappointed to see that even though some of us at the table had finished by the time the rest got their food, the management had not even comped one meal or made any kind of adjustment. We did get to see the floor show, which I've heard a regular Mother's thing--the screaming chef. She ripped one of her server's heads off... read more

My mommy's not home right now!! – Mother's is a lose-lose situation. If the chef and resident Mother isn't there, then the food quality suffers. It seems the only way the kitchen staff is able to function properly is to have the boss lady screaming at them. This is the other drawback to Mother's-when Mom's home, she's yelling at the staff (often in the middle of the dining room,), or sitting at the bar in a rage. I'd say, if you want home cooking, stay at home and cook it yourself.

Home away from home – I love this place! It is a comfortable place to be, with an interesting mix of diners of all ages. The vibe is like a big, communal dining room at home. Light and airy feel, nice on our many rainy mornings, afternoons, and evenings. The calamari are a must-have, and the steak frites is a standby on my list. Weekend brunches are the time when the place really shines, and unless you've got a reservation, expect a long wait (but it'll be worth it).

Does it get any worse? – The tables were set so close together that our chairs were back to back with those behind us and my elbows almost hit the woman at the table next to me. And we can't forget about having to share our head room with the swarm of flies that hovered while we ate. Lunch sandwiches come with pasta salad - we upgraded to homemade fries - I guess the extra $1.50 is for all the grease. I also tried a rootbeer float which looked good until I poored on the warm rootbeer which just melted the icecream. Service w... read more

delish! like home food! – Everything I have tried at Mother's so far has been wonderful. The selection has something for everyone and the dessert selection had too much for me to choose from. Excellent brunch.

Bland food, excellent service – I was very impressed with the service. Very attentive and knowledgable. However, the tomato/fennell soup I had tasted like Campbell's Soup, and the Meatloaf Sandwich was bland and uninteresting.

Dee-lish – We showed up at 1:30 on Sunday afternoon and were seated promptly. I had the biscuit breakfast and spouse had the cajun hash. Both were delicious, though I prefer my food to be served on the "ouch that's hot" side. Especially on a cold day in December. They may want to keep an eye on the temp and the plate warmers. The restaurant has a comfy, "shabby chic" decor that was marred only by the jarring funk music. Sunday brunch should be relaxing, such as jazz standards in my opinion. One weird thing was our waiter's i... read more
