About this business

With the aim of addressing the stark absence of quality restaurants offering home-style food in the area, chef and owner Lisa Schroeder has taken the experience gained at the likes of Le Cirque to create wonderfully fresh, bistro-style cuisine in the light and airy ambiance of this old Irish bank building. Breakfast and lunch menus at Mother's Bistro & Bar offer an excellent array of Northwestern specialties prepared to the highest standards. There is more variation in the dinner menu, with everything from salads to pot roas... read more

Mom's Comfort Food – My aunt & I are were visiting Portland for the first time and pulled out our Portland Visiter's Map to find a place to eat. We found Mother's listed in the guide so we thought we would check it out. The ambience is comfortable, classy but you can dress casually(jeans, etc.) The chicken and dumplings is the best! Reminds me of what my Southern Grandmother used to make. Service is good sometimes a little slow. An okay place to take children but seems to be designed for an older crowd.

like water for chocolate – My husband and I recently visited my sister in Portland. At her suggestion, we celebrated my birthday at Mother's. The service was friendly and the menu enticing, but midway through our first course the chef began berating the entire staff. The inappropriate language and tone completely ruined our experience. I'm a business owner and I don't believe there is ever an occasion to treat employees this way. My sister, who recommended Mother's for this occasion, was embarrassed. To be sure, we will not ... read more

good basic brunch – I've only had brunch at Mother's, so far. I'm sure I'll end up there for another meal in the future. This is a great brunch spot -- plenty of choices, and the service was impeccable. As for the food, it's good, better than good in fact; not boring, and yet not insanely inventive or bizarre, pretty much average compared to all those california/american cuisine restaurants out there. (I'm secretly hoping the dinner menu would throw a few culinary surprises my way, but that's just what I prefer.)

Aren't sure what to eat? This is the.... – This is the place for breakfast, lunch or dinner! The atmostphere is casual but nice. The staff is attentive, yet fun. The food is amazing. For breakfast the salmon hash was to die for. What is even better is how late they serve breakfast. As for lunch and dinner, everything is good. Been there a few times and try something new each time. One thing that is incredible is her mac-n-cheese. It changes all of the time. Hey, the kitchen is run by a CIA chef! That says alot right there! T... read more

Wonderful! – My husband and I have been having breakfast at Mother's Bistro every weekend for almost 3 years. We love the food, the coffee, the service and the atmosphere. I used to always get the mushroom omlete, however, now it seems like there is something new and wonderful on each weeks specials list. My husband and I have never been disappointed - we take all of our guests there and recommend it highly.

The BEST! – Such a deal! You know you've come to the right place when you walk in the door to a warm, friendly greeting. A look at the menu makes you wonder if your grandmother has been transported to Portland and is cooking in the kitchen. Then again, it could be from that little bistrot you found in Paris. I had steak frites. My partner had a tortilla crusted salmon with lime buerre blanc. We both had a wonderful time. And the personal visit from "Mother" made the whole thing complete. I was visiting in Portland from a pla... read more

PDX PROUD! – What a DELIGHT! Now, THIS is a place that Portlanders can be proud of!! Good food, GREAT deserts ~ in a GENIUNE setting right in the heart of downtown. You want to take your folks here when they come to visit; you can always depend on it; and, you wish Mother's was ON THE STREET WHERE YOU LIVE ;-)

Lounge is good too – We ate in the lounge because the restaurant was full. Started with an absolutely great salad. Entrees were fine too. Homemade rolls were pretty tasteless. Service great. Desserts looked fantastic, but we skipped them.
