Chef Bruce Carey and Chef Dolan Lane are two names associated with top-tier restaurants of the Northwest and the duo is now the driving force behind Clarklewis. This New American restaurant joins the trailblazers of the farm-to table movement, and presents Portlanders with a locally-inspired menu that borrows international flavors - mainly French and Italian. Most of the value is on the plate as the restaurant is housed inside a re-purposed warehouse with aesthetically pleasing yet rustic decor. Service adheres to a high sta... read more

Almost Totally Blew It – Expecting grand things from these ripe extraordinares, I was surprised to have to coax my dining companion into her 2nd visit. The food, though simple, is well-prepared, fresh, & reasonably priced. The ambiance is quasi-trendy (bordering on grunge) and in an apparent effort to turn tables, the chairs are so uncomfortable you won't dare linger. What killed the deal was the reservation/host/bar service. Reservations are complicated & require way too many confirmations. Hosts were smug, even with a rese... read more
Lousy Experience – First time eating at this resturant and I have nothing good to say about it except my party was seated right away. The service was very poor and slow. We ordered family style and each plate took forever to come out. We were so hungry in between each plate that we kept asking for extra olives with our martinis. When the food did come, it was medicore at best, one of the noodle dishes tasted like hamberger helper. The prices of the food weren't too bad, but I recommend spending your money elsewhere. Never wi... read more
A Unique dining experience – After a 2nd try at Reservations, I finally made it to Clarklewis, and overall it was worth the wait. The food was delicious. I highly reccomend the gnocchi...it practically melted in my mouth, and the pork with apples and ciopollinis was also phenomenal. The atmoshphere was dark, but the votives in the window and on the tables, make it romantic. I especially like the openness of the kitchen. It adds a unique feeling to the overall dining experience. It is unlike any other restaurant in portland
Lovely meal – I know there are mixed reviews on this place, but I've got to say that I really loved my meal. I thought everything was prepared in a lovely fashion. The flavors were superb and I love the concept of being able to order dishes in three different sizes, one of which will definitely match your appetite and party size. My only complaint was the noise level. It tends to get a bit noisy, so warm up your vocal chords before going otherwise you'll never be heard.
What a great Night! – I was recently at clarklewis with a handful of friends, and we had a wonderful experience. The bar was helpful, the waiters were great and the food was excellent. It was a warm night, so the warehouse doors were up to let in a breeze. It was a classic Portland experience.
STAY AWAY! – This was one of the most frustrating dining experiences my friends and I have ever had. - Reservations at 9:30...not seated until nearly 10:30. - After some prodding the host offered to by us a round of drinks. This host (there appear to be about 6!) neglected to inform our waitress and we had to point it our ourselves. - Horrible service! The staff, although hip and attractive have no clue. Our groovy water carafe sat empty on our table until after we paid our bill which by the way we had to wait inexplicably l... read more
Fab new SE Portland gem! – Clarklewis is a great new higher end inner SE reatuarant that finally gives the eastsiders a trendy oasis without the parking hassle or ridiculous prices of the Peral. The menu is ever changing and the wait staff was very knowledgeable about the eclectic fare offered. Prices were very good for a swanky joint. My only issue was their seats were the most uncomfortable in town! You can barely finish your meal and forget chatting afterwards as your butt is aching by the main course!
The restaurant with a curfew – The curfew is that you have to get there before dusk or you won't be able to see the menu or what you're eating. They do pass around one flashlight per table while you read the menus, a poorly executed attempt at trendy. The server was definitely doing us a favor by waiting on our table. The food was original and good. Did not live up to all the hype you hear. We recommend getting some restaurant in experience in NYC to see how it should be done and then come back to our lovely Portland.
Must have improved – My dining experience was exceptional, a "culinary adventure," if you will. Service exceeded anything I've come to expect even at other places. Which made me wonder: why the negative reviews? I actually came back this morning to re-read them and it becomes clear what's going on: most of these reviews were written months ago. Clearly, they've got their act together. Additionally, those who aren't into an adventure may consider sticking with Sizzler or Carrows. These chefs are artists. And service? I lost t... read more
