Chef Bruce Carey and Chef Dolan Lane are two names associated with top-tier restaurants of the Northwest and the duo is now the driving force behind Clarklewis. This New American restaurant joins the trailblazers of the farm-to table movement, and presents Portlanders with a locally-inspired menu that borrows international flavors - mainly French and Italian. Most of the value is on the plate as the restaurant is housed inside a re-purposed warehouse with aesthetically pleasing yet rustic decor. Service adheres to a high sta... read more

All-around great experience – Love, love, love this place. Was in town for business and thought I'd try it, since I'd read a lot of positive reviews. Ate at the bar, and Peter (precision manuever bartender...think Riverdance, only with cocktails and moving arms) took great care of me. Try the Honey Martini. Perfect meal starter. Then try to unbelievable spring salad, made with spring greens, mint, parmesean, prosciutto, and a lemon dressing. Follow it up with the fennel sage risotto. Cannot think of one thing I would change ... read more
Uneven – Generally very tasty food, but not consistently great as you would expect with all of the adulation poured on this establishment. One great innovation - serving different chef's menus to my date & I, so we got to sample twice as many dishes. That's a great idea. One pathetic problem - I too had a lamb dish that was a tough cut of meat cooked rare; so tough that it was hard to cut it with a knife, much less chew it. Every home cook knows that you cook tough cuts long & well, not rare. The service was fast, but only a... read more
Resting on its laurels? – We used to love Clarklewis and thought it was one of the best restaurants in Portland. It was a special place to enjoy a great meal. Now I am just disappointed that we had a really mediocre dinner. The lamb was fatty and tough. The fish was boring and overcooked. The pasta was salty and little else-- and these were the chef's choices. On top of that, the service was too fast for an upscale restaurant...dinner at that kind of place should be an event, not fast food. I miss the old Clarklewis!
More than Pleasant – You either love it or hate it, we love it. A wait, yes but the bartender provided us with good service and good drink. The food, yummy, not huge portions, but if thats what you want go to a buffet.
If you have the bucks, it's worth it. – The dishes were superb - very fresh, albeit small. Contrary to other reviews, I found out server very helpful and friendly, although I can understand why some may be intimidated by their uber-hipness. Cocktails were also very fresh and creative. Hard to maintain a quiet conversation, though. But if you seek trendy and NOW - this is the place for you.
I wanted it to be good. – I went here with my wife and a group of her business colleagues. We had read the reviews but also had heard that it was once rated a top Portland restaurant. Unfortunately for us, the poor reviews were accurate. To begin with, the food was very salty. There were also no beef or poulty selections on the menu. It was also quite overpriced. In previous reviews we had read that many of the servers were pretentious. We did not find this to be true although our server was not very friendly or attentive. W... read more
THIS CHEF IS NOT ALL HE SAYS HE IS! – I have eaten in restaurants all over the world and to say the food here at clarklewis is below average is to speak kindly. The meats at best taste salt cured and the wine selection chosen for this establishment is worse than the food. While Oregon is known for having excellent wine choices apparently chef/owner Morgan Brownlow overlooked those. The staff is snooty without a cause and the atmosphere is mediocre trendy.
the Emperor Has no clothes on! – Five of us wanted to try Clarklewis and we were all disappointed. They seated us at a small 4 top. Apparently they don't normally seat parties of 5 at the tables with an extension. We requested the latter and they finally gave in but only under pressure. It was not a good beginning. Food was okay - not great, overpriced for small portions. My husband ordered a large pasta and someone ordered a small and the portions were reversed. The waiter was told of this mistake he behaved as if it was ou... read more
Exceptional food, good experience – Three guests and I dined at Clarklewis on 11/22/05 and all tried the chef's menu. At $35 it was an exceptional value- four courses and up to four plates per course- I would recommend this route highly. With the chef's menu, not only did we get a sampling of the nearly the entire fall menu, the portions were of good size for all of us to have as much of each dish as we wanted- we ended the night very full. There was not one dish that was served that we didn't like or wasn't well prepared. T... read more
