Chef Bruce Carey and Chef Dolan Lane are two names associated with top-tier restaurants of the Northwest and the duo is now the driving force behind Clarklewis. This New American restaurant joins the trailblazers of the farm-to table movement, and presents Portlanders with a locally-inspired menu that borrows international flavors - mainly French and Italian. Most of the value is on the plate as the restaurant is housed inside a re-purposed warehouse with aesthetically pleasing yet rustic decor. Service adheres to a high sta... read more

Hmmm...this could be great? – Food...very good! Service? That obviously wasn't discussed when the staff was hired...especially if they 'automatically' add the 18%. Why should they bother? They are going to get a substantial tip! Almost had to go over and get the person responsible for our table. Very SLOW and VERY unattentive. You may want to use weighs before going there as you are responsible for pouring your water. The glass pitchers (or vases) weigh a ton before the water is in it. And, you had better request COLD, ice w... read more
excellent food; slow service – The salad with wine vinagrette and the asparagus salad were amazing. The bruscetta with artichokes was oily, but in a good way. The asparagus ravioli was simple, yet tasty. The pasta with sole was superb and the swordfish was excellent. The whole dinner took 2 hours, which is fine if you're not in any kind of hurry. The chairs are excruciating on the back and hard to deal with for 2 hours. I will definitely go back, but I will be sure I don't have to be anywhere.
Portland's Best Meal – I'm hard pressed to think of another restaurant which is as excellent as clarklewis. The folks at ripe have translated their 'it's all about the food' style to a full restaurant with amazing sucess. One great feature. The Chef's menu. For $30 per person you can order a 3 course meal that will be whatever the chef serves. No deliberation, no choices, just fantastic surprises! My wife and I both ordered 'different' chef's dinners and were both very pleased with the results. It doesn't get better than Cla... read more
WOW! – This place is extraordinary, affording delicious food, clean and simple ambiance, and an utter lack of pretension.
One Word- Four Letters- N.E.X.T. – This restaurant is highly over rated. Tries to look groovy, which is not a bad thing. Host and servers seem a bit...unfocused. Took forever to get glasses for water( a pitcher is on each table). Server recommended the "chef's choice". Literature about this alternative menu is on each table, but unclear about the actual cost. The meal, plus bottle of wine, over $100 (including tip). Food was very average ( if that is what the chef suggests, have doubts). Small portions in this sort of three ... read more
fantastic!! – I am not sure what restaurant the first reviewer went to, but the review was way off base. I will say that i did smell like woodsmoke for the rest of the night, but that was all that was correct about that review. The meal was one of the best i have ever had in portland. I have lived in New York and San Francisco and I think that meal rivaled any I have had in a while. The pricing was very affordable as well. I had dinner with four other people (two of who live in S.F.) and we all thought everything that we ord... read more
Hot, yet, not – ClarkLewis is to be applauded for trying something new to Portland. But they miss the mark with no real personality-as in the human kind-someone to recognize you, greet you and make you feel welcome. Servers are of the no-eye-contact, slightly disdainful, I am hipper than you variety. No real knowledge of food preparation, or wines to recommend. Seemingly inexpensive menu adds up quickly, 2 people can easily top out at $100 if you order an appetizer, salad or pasta and an entree and wine. No air conditioning ... read more
