About this business

The serpentine queues outside this little pizzeria is a fair enough indication of it's popularity in the city. However, Apizza Scholls' fame goes far beyondPortland. This no non-sense pizzeria is frequently listed amongst the country's top pizza places and is a must-visit fixture when in the city. The restaurant's kitchen headed by owner Brian Spangler delights with his single-minded focus of crafting some of the best pizza pies. Choose from a delectable selection of house pies featuring classics like the Apizza Margherita a... read more

Best Pizza I Have Ever Had! – After hearing much about this pizzeria, my wife and I decided to brave the wait that is so talked about online. We arrived at 6:30 on a wednesday night and only waited about 20minutes for a table. We initially sat in the waiting area that evidently did not exist until this year and ordered a glass of wine. My wife pointed out the pinball machines across the room and we got two games in before our name was called. Our drinks were transfered to the table by the hostess and our server was prompt in... read more

They've Lost Their Way – I've gone there for a couple of years for what was the best pizza in Portland. Since they've expanded to what feels like a soul-less space next door with none of the charm of the original space on Hawthorne, it takes longer to get your pizza and the quality has gone down. Apparently they didn't expand the kitchen so what used to take a long time is now interminable. There's a needed waiting area is in this new side, with its noise from hungry waiting customers. But for whatever thoughtless reason (is... read more

Go after 8 pm and take your chances to taste good pizza – If you love crisp light pizza dough and flavorful toppings then Apizza Scholls is place worth trying. You are limited to 3 toppings and only 1 can be a meat - so if you're looking for Carnivorous or Predator style then this isn't the place for you. They make their dough by hand so when they run out they close ...so you run a chance of not eating if you show up past 8:30 pm, but if you show up at 5:10 p.m. then your in for an hour wait. The place is small and doors ope... read more

I Don't Get It – Why is everybody raving about this place? Like many others, I was seduced into believing this would be the best pizza in town. Went there with two of my friends last Saturday. Had to wait an hour and a half and it sure wasn't worth it. The salad was good, but nothing special. Same for the Pizza. We tried the sausage and pepper one, as well as the Margarita with anchovies. It was decent pizza, but nothing special at all. Service was prompt, but not especially friendly either. Don't waste your time. Portland h... read more

Hawthorn Hipster Chow – I'm sorry, this isn't very sophisticated pizza. I appreciate the hard work this family owned restaurant commits to this enterprise, so I feel a little guilty for saying so... I sense what they're trying to do with the burnt thing (an attempt to mimic wood-burning stoves), but like burnt coffee (a la Starbucks) burnt is burnt, it's not an art (as an aside, burnt food is not healthy, but the science is irrelevant to overall conversation). It was just a little painful to observe the provinciality of the ... read more

Overrated – If waiting an hour for burnt pizza that lacks cheese and sauce for $20 is your idea of a pleasant night out of dining, then this is the place for you. In all honesty, I've had better frozen pies than what I had here. To be fair, service was good, but I didn't get it. Being from NYC, I suppose I'm just spoiled with real pizzarias.

Not the Best But Pretty Darn Good – I'm a pizza fiend! I took a friend who also loves pizza. We both had heard about how great this place is & wanted to test it out. We really liked the pizza. The thin chewy crust was very good. And the toppings (we had a basic pie with mushrooms, olives & basil) were delightful. The sauce had crushed tomatoes, which I love, however the flavor was lacking a little. Also I would have liked to see just a bit more cheese. The service was fine. Not really bad or really good. We went at 5:30pm on... read more

i had never noticed it driving by... – i had never seen this little pizza spot zipping up hawthorne, but was recently introduced to it by one of my good girlfriends. When we came in, we actually had to knock because one of the little kids playing in the front of the room had locked the door. There were a lot of families waiting to sit down, but it seemed like a lot of people knew each other, or were just chatting because their kids were playing together. We ended up waiting for almost 2 hours for a party of five to sit down ... read more

Good food, horrible service, won't go back – I brought a party of five there and signed in at 7:15pm. Spent two hours waiting at the bar ordering beer and apps while the wait staff sat those who arrived after us. The staff continually chose to sit multiple small parties of two or three at the big tables. They sat our group of 5 at a 4-top. It became obvious that there would be nowhere to put the food, so they sat us at one of the large party tables, since at this point the once packed, standing room only area was now complet... read more
