About this business

The serpentine queues outside this little pizzeria is a fair enough indication of it's popularity in the city. However, Apizza Scholls' fame goes far beyondPortland. This no non-sense pizzeria is frequently listed amongst the country's top pizza places and is a must-visit fixture when in the city. The restaurant's kitchen headed by owner Brian Spangler delights with his single-minded focus of crafting some of the best pizza pies. Choose from a delectable selection of house pies featuring classics like the Apizza Margherita a... read more

Superb pizza, salad, antipasta, and service! – After reading the recent review in WW, I had to try this place, since I'm new and still exploring the region. All I can say is it's likely the best I've ever sampled, anywhere. The table waiters were prompt, and not superficially cheerful; they appeared to really like working there. First, the salad: plenty of everything, and a dressing and seasoning that slowed my pace to enjoy every tidbit. The antipasta plate was full of tasty treats, and similar to the salad in that it requi... read more

Best pizza anywhere ;) – Oh the Pizza is grand at Scholls! Just make sure you take some patient pie eating compatriots with you. If you have a party of 2 to 4 (two for a date seems perfect) then somewhat prompt seating awaits you. If it's crowded and you've brought a crowd expect 40 minutes to 2 hours to get fed! Yep, the food is that crazy here. It's unlike any pie around the west coast, very new york and very traditional. It's not quite european as top notch plaqces like Nostrana dish that out of their in view wood fire ov... read more

Don't believe the hype! – So here's the deal get there early, stand in line, and watch how the line forms down the street. Next herd in inside and get seated. I was one of the first to get an order out, Half pepperoni half cheese, this my favorite way to rate my first time at a pizza place. I'm sitting at the bar watching how they make the pie, dough, cheese, sauce, pepperoni, hmm. Ok so I'm reading the back of the menu about how the pizza is made and then all of a sudden I was overcome with this wave of pretentiousness. I s... read more

Lost my business despite the tasty pizza. – I love apizza scholls. I think it's the best in town. However, they have lost my business for good. After being turned away FIVE times in a row, including 7:30 on a Friday night, I'm sick of their inability to make enough pizza dough for the evening. I think it is incredibly foolish for them to double the size of the restaurant yet not double the amount of dough they make. It's one thing to leave people wanting more, but I'm sick of it. From now on Ken's Artisan Pizza gets my busin... read more

I f you like abuse, get it here – Apizza Scholls is wrong if they think their purposely gruff style adds to their appeal. Anyway, you would have to have VERY good food to pull that one off successfully. I went there with a group of people from New York. We saw many pizzas go past our table and they all looked charred, so we asked the waitress if we could request our pizzas a little less done. She said "Absolutely Not, we make them the way we like." They did indeed arrive quite burned. On their menu, they describe this as car... read more

Won't be going back!! – good pizza, but the wait and terribly slow and rude service have regrettably made me decide not to go back even though I've been a big fan since their days out in Scholls, the final straw was when we went with a friend who became very ill while waiting outside and when they finally opened my friend was practically stampeded and not one person offered to help, including the staff!!!

Best Pizza I've ever had – I saw this place on the Anthony Bourdain show and thought it'd be fun to try. The restaurant was crowded with a long wait, but so worth it. The Caesar salad was terrific, but the Pizza was the best I've ever had. We tried several, but my favorite was the truffle oil pizza.

Most fantastic pizza I or any of my friends have ever had – I lived the first 18 years of my life in Croatia, next door to Italy, and I've eaten plenty of excellent pizza. I've been to New York many times, and I've enjoyed the pizza there as well. Since moving to Portland earlier this year, though, I've found a place that makes the best pizza I've ever been fortunate enough to taste. Whenever I have someone visit Portland, this is the first place we go for food. Without an exception, everyone has been blown away by Scholls. ... read more

Yeah, they have good pizza. But then there's the crappy service and random charges... – Our first time there was fine. We got there late on a weekday and had to wait a while, of course, but we just went to a bar nearby and ended up timing our return right. Our second time there was yesterday, a Saturday, their busiest day. We got there at 4:30 (doors open at 5:00) and were 4th in line. They opened the doors at 5:00 on the spot, then seated and served water to everyone. Then the mad rush of taking orders, and this is the part... read more
