This Californian pub offers traditional bar food turned gourmet like Belgian ale-steamed mussels, wood grilled rib eye and a leek and goat cheese tart. Melrose hipsters usually go for the cheap-by-the-glass wine list and the boutique beer selection while locals go for the community table as it holds up to ten and naturally people stop in for people watching. Everything on the menu is freshly prepared and inexpensive considering the Melrose Avenue location. The Village Idiot is anything but idiotic and is perfect for a pleasa... read more

good bar scene – my friends and i checked out this place and it was pretty nice. the space was large although it could get noisy. the beer selection was not bad. it was disappointing to find out that they were out of fish and chips. my friend had the pie and he thought that was good. another had the sausage and that was good. my fish was just ok. i would probably go back for the bar scene but not necessarily for the food.
Just what Melrose needed! – Los Angeles seriously lacks in comfortable, good neighborhood restaurants. Village Idiot fits the bill perfectly! Considering the place has only been open a few weeks and is jammed packed, I have been really pleasantly surprised by the consistently excellent service and food. The waitstaff is very knowledgable and offers just the right amount of service - not too much, not too little - and the manager/owners are brilliant. I have noticed them there every night keeping an eye on things and keeping ... read more
totally great and unexpectedly good food. – Four of us went to the village idiot this past weekend on the recommendation of friends who has been and we had an awesome time. I was expecting more of a scene but it was totally cool and had a very warm and cozy feel. It was about 8.30 and the joint was jumpin'. We waited about 25 mins for a table at the bar. I must say the bar was pretty crowded while we waited. (a little drawback). The staff seem knowledgeable, and really friendly, simply too nice and pleasant for the amount of... read more
Pub vibe meets loft space meets confusion... – The Village Idiot/ "The Public House" is a new spot down on Melrose worth a stop in. Its fun. For the effort I know was put into this place, though, it seems a little amateurish. The tables & chairs feel like they were purchased at a garage sale. If you look up at the ceiling you dont see a pub ceiling...you see three different ceilings, none of which really look much like an english ale joint. I like the big windows in the front wall and the half-height banquets....they look fu... read more
