About this business

This Californian pub offers traditional bar food turned gourmet like Belgian ale-steamed mussels, wood grilled rib eye and a leek and goat cheese tart. Melrose hipsters usually go for the cheap-by-the-glass wine list and the boutique beer selection while locals go for the community table as it holds up to ten and naturally people stop in for people watching. Everything on the menu is freshly prepared and inexpensive considering the Melrose Avenue location. The Village Idiot is anything but idiotic and is perfect for a pleasa... read more

Good Place, avoid peak hours. – I have been there a handful of times and have had good experiences each time. An area where people might get put off by this place is if they go during peak bar hours fri/sat as the place can get pretty packed/loud and there are just not enough bartenders to handle the crowd. But if you get there when it isn't really packed then the place is surprisingly chill and relaxing. The beer selection isn't that big, but they do have a few local beers that are great. The food isn't amazing but I would ... read more

For a few drinks it was fun – stopped in there for a few drinks late one night. i like the what the place looks like. the drinks were fine, but i wish we had the nice barback who cleared off the bar in front of us as our bartender because the bartender that was there totally ignored us. we ended up telling the really cool barback to tell our lame bartender what we wanted. but we got our drinks, and they were good. I didnt have the nightmare that the past few people expreienced, but i only went expecting a chill place to hang... read more

AVOID AVOID AVOID - bad bartenders, bad waiters - HORRIBLE uncooked food, unsanitary bathrooms!! – This was a horrific experience! The food, the service, the bathrooms - disgusting. We eat out a great deal in Los Angeles and would rate this restaurant poorly on every level. Starting with the staff at the bar - poor on customer service and ability. Move onto the atmosphere - cramped and unclean. Bathrooms that were filthy - unsanitary, no paper, no service and overflowing toilets. The menu lacked imagination and truth. A "chi... read more

Shoot me – Go anywhere else. I wanted to throw to grab the pint glass of the guy next to me and throw it at the bartenders ignoring us. I would have thrown my own but it took 10 minutes to get a beer at a not very crowded bar. Nothing special. Boring. Boring. Boring.

Why not take reservations?? – I went there opening week with three other people for dinner on a Saturday night. When we arrived we were told there would be a 20 minute wait. 35 minutes later I couldn't stop staring at the open table that no one was being seated at. 15 minutes later we were seated at a table with no silverware, no napkins, no menus and no waiter for 10 minutes. At that point I was hungry, shocked that no one thought a host might be a good idea and then infuriated when we found out that the 5 "signature items"... read more

Missed the Boat! – I have been to the idiot 3 times. Wow did they miss the mark on this one! When I went in on a friday late, the place was packed, you couldn't get a drink and there was no where to sit, it was also way too loud. With great hopes and thinking it was opening week jitters I went back, this time for a business dinner and drinks - food was ok but not great, beer selection is pitiful for it to be a pub and we were rushed from our table before being offered dessert or anything else. Third time was a repeat of the ... read more

Too Good to Be True! – this is quite definitely the first restaurant i've been excited about in ages! extremely attractive and comfortable with excellent food and unbelievably reasonable prices. my favorite dishes so far are the braised pork shoulder with garlic white beans, ALL the starters and sides (especially the decadent brussels sprouts with bacon), grilled chicken, cornmeal crusted catfish and the warm frisee salad with potatoes, bacon, egg, & shallot vinaigrette. can't wait to taste the mussels and the burger which f... read more
