This Californian pub offers traditional bar food turned gourmet like Belgian ale-steamed mussels, wood grilled rib eye and a leek and goat cheese tart. Melrose hipsters usually go for the cheap-by-the-glass wine list and the boutique beer selection while locals go for the community table as it holds up to ten and naturally people stop in for people watching. Everything on the menu is freshly prepared and inexpensive considering the Melrose Avenue location. The Village Idiot is anything but idiotic and is perfect for a pleasa... read more

Great drinks with high decibel level – How can you fault a place that has saison dupont on the menu? While the beer selection is great and the wine choices surprisingly good and reasonable (marlborough sauvignon blancs for under $10 a glass), the acoustics make conversation nearly impossible. However, its casual and fun enough that you don't need to go with a group. Trying to get served at the bar can be challenging as this place gets packed in the evenings.
Drinks and Mussels – Let's be honest. The place is packed and loud. But I'll go any day of the week for drink with friends. The bartenders are great and the crowd is the lingering type -- despite the busy factor something makes you feel like you could stay all night. And I often do. I'm all for pub food, but this place isn't on my top eats list in town. That said if you're going for a beer -- they have great local microbrews -- get the mussels. You won't regret it.
Worth the wait and mediocre service – Everything on the menu is delicious! Try the brussel sprouts with bacon but ask for less grease if you’re trying to be healthy. Great pick up place for singles too!
Great Lunch – Had a great lunch at The Village Idiot. The pork sandwich with chutney was fantastic. I have eaten here in the past and it s always very good for a quick, casual bite and drink. I wish it was in my my neighborhood.
Good Balance of Bar Drinks and Restaurant Food But With Some Misses – A few of my friends and I had dinner and thought it was a pretty good bar & restaurant with a few downers. The design was interesting with a bar counter situated in the center of the restaurant and cushy booths. It also resembled an English-styled pub, so it attracted a hip crowd. Most of the drinks were reasonably priced (pints at $6), only some mixed drinks and wine were a bit pricier. The food, though, was a hit-or-miss. What I considered a miss was foo... read more
I?m so torn! – OK, I went last night and I?m totally middle of the road on this place. The food was good and reasonably priced, but it was so crowded and everyone standing at the bar was pretty much sitting on our table. I seriously stared at people?s butts about 1 foot from my food! It just ruined the night for me. I think if we had been able to get a table farther away from the bar area, this wouldn?t have been a problem. So, I?ll definitely go back, I just now know to be more specific on where I sit!
Mobbed on weekends. Good food. Loud. Valet park. – We arrived 10 pm Friday and no street parking availble. Valet parking a must! Waited 45 minutes to get inside. It was mobbed and loud. The food was good and drinks were a bit pricey. Will return on a week night.
One of my top 5 spots. – Got this account to praise and defend my favorite pub. The idiot has its flaws: can get mobbed, is a touch expensive, and has a few too many "bro" types, but you can't beat the burger/fish and chips and the beer selection is top notch. Service is B+ and the decor is open and attractive. You'd have to be an idiot to write this one off.
LAME...time to move on! – This place is just lame...can you say meat market? it reminds me of the bars in san diego. it's offensive to real gastropubs to associate this place with the rest. ambience is nice, but it better be - this is melrose! over-priced drinks - this is melrose! the food apparantly depends on how the kitchen staff feels each night - I've had good, I've had terrible. There are just too many 'bros' that hang out here now, might as well be at Sharky's in Hermosa. If you wanna meet lame-ass hollywood wannabe d... read more
