This Californian pub offers traditional bar food turned gourmet like Belgian ale-steamed mussels, wood grilled rib eye and a leek and goat cheese tart. Melrose hipsters usually go for the cheap-by-the-glass wine list and the boutique beer selection while locals go for the community table as it holds up to ten and naturally people stop in for people watching. Everything on the menu is freshly prepared and inexpensive considering the Melrose Avenue location. The Village Idiot is anything but idiotic and is perfect for a pleasa... read more

Weekly Fan of the V.I. – I love the village idiot! I come here almost every wed with my friends. And part of the charm is grabbing a drink at the bar and waiting for a table (we are usually 6-8 ppl and want a booth). The food is ALWAYS good, and the service though sometimes hurried is always on point. I love the people who come to this place: smart, social, unpretentious, attractive (but not in a horrible LA way). I've come and sat at the bar with a girlfriend and ordered dinner. The bartenders are always social, and I alway... read more
never again – HORRID. I ordered the fish and chips - the fish was burnt, the fries were awful. My date ordered the burger medium and it was well-done and charred. Never going back.
If you are a single average L.A. douchbag looking for some average single L.A. chicks this is the place for you. Everyone here is so average L.A. its disgusting and they all think they're so hip because they are coming here. Trust me this place is LAME. Oh, and Don't expect good service the Doorman was unbelievably arrogant and rude to me. Guess I was too "weird."
Good Food, Great price, Extremely LOUD. – I visited the establishment @ 9pm on a Saturday, and waited 30 min to sit, and it was crowded and loud then. Shortly after we sat, it started getting extremely loud and overcrowded. The service was very good all things considered, and the food was tasty and a great value. Our waitress confirmed that it was an average night so if you don't mind the overcrowding and roar of people talking, it?s all good.
Get there before 10pm – Surprisingly sophisticated/yummy food, reasonably priced, good service, attractive "dinner" crowd, will return 4 sure
No-reservations, casual-chic gastropub with adds a flirtatious mix to thriving Melrose Restaurant Row. – High ceilings and large wood-framed windows lined with lofted banquettes create an airier (read: noisier) vibe than those cozy gastropubs across the pond. An exhibition kitchen and central bar island add to the bustle, as do the friendly servers gliding from table to table. The otherwise bare-brick walls feature shocking blown-up images snapped during 1993's London Riot. From traditional fish and chips fare to flavorful t... read more
Excellent English Pub, Stylish, Great customer service, price within reason, value. – This beautifully appointed gem of an English Pub in the heart of the trendy Melrose shopping district as filled the void Chianti left in a tasteful and much appreciated manner. The staff is courteous, the food and drink delicious, plentiful, and fairly priced, and the atmosphere, totally fabulous. Although parking in this neighborhood can be a challenge, it is completely worth the effort to make it to lunch at this unusual and exceptional s... read more
Fun gastropub with a cool vibe, but rude and unhelpful staff... – Friends and I decided to check this place out after a nice dinner. Great location on Melrose. Central to many things. Cool vibe inside if you're looking for a hip yet comfortable hassle-free place to hang with friends and throw some back. Decent beer selection (definitely not great, although they might claim so). One major knock on this place is the rude and unknowledgeable staff, from the servers to the bartenders. First, they rudely told us we had to get our... read more
Skip on the fish sandwich – Overall, the group experience here was positive. Three of us went for lunch. I had the catfish sandwich, which I'd recommend skipping. But my two buddies loved their choices (sorry, can't tell you what they were). To make up for it, I chose the cookie ala mode for dessert. The atmosphere for Friday lunch was quiet. The place is beautiful. I wish I could have scored it better.
