The idea for Ruby’s Diner was born in 1980 after a run on the beach. Doug Cavanaugh had just returned to his native Southern California after successfully restoring and running a restaurant on Nantucket Island off Cape Cod. Had dinner here on the last night of our vacation. I was excited to find a full service sitdown restaurant on the pier. There was a 10 minute wait and we were seated upstairs. Loved the classic 50s theme of traditional American hamburger joint. Kids menu included a little paper muscle car and stickers. I had the siracha burger and my wife was able to substitute a garden patty for her burger. Kids had corndog, bbq chicken and chicken fingers. I thought the atmosphere was great. I ordered breakfast it was suppose to be two jumbo eggs thick cut bacon and home frys. Scrambled eggs were under cooked and a very small portion, bacon all fat and under cooked (couldn't even eat it) home frys were good but a very small portion. One waitress to serve 13 tables... Wouldn't recommend this place for breakfast if your hungry...
I usually love Ruby's. However I went in and sat at the counter, for over 20 minutes. No one ever said a word to me. I finally left before ever getting my order taken, or having even an, "Sorry we're really busy. I'll be with you as soon as I can." I had paid for parking, and only had an hour and ten minutes left. Fun place for a meal at the pier in Huntington Beach. The fried green beans are superb as are the milk shakes!
