Took an 11 year old and a 13 year old on the behind the scenes tour, they liked it. Tour guide was great! Visitor center with the movie and cafe were nice additions. The garden tour has us inspired to plant as soon as we get home with our Monticello heirloom seed kits. Will be back!
I very much enjoyed this 45-minute tour. We covered all of the most important things and our tour guide was very knowledgeable. She included fun stories, like the fact that Jefferson used to emerge his feet in ice water every morning. Well done. Highly recommended!
The august mansion is defiled by crass commercialization. The guides were no more than cattle herders. Better to read about the life and times of Jefferson than witness what has become a mass-marketed abomination.
I really enjoy the fact they are trying to restore the place back to the original way Thomas Jefferson had meant it to be back in the 1800s. I also am grateful that they keep this establishment well preserved with the gardens and areas around the house. Such a piece of American history deserves to be treated this way.
So much to see... so much to learn. The lives of the slaves and their stories along Milburry lane is truly moving.
You could go there for the gardens, you could go there for the history, or you could there just for some great family memories and photos. We did all of that and more yesterday and can't wait to do it again.
Great facility but the change to "self-guided" tours of the house is not for the better. Although there are guides in each room, the flow of visitors bunches up whenever some visitor engages a guide for more than a minute or two. This makes for a somewhat disorganized and highly variable experience. Fortunately, I visited a couple of years ago, but I felt sorry for those visiting for the first and probably the only time. The garden tour and slave tour were excellent- would have been nice to have the same quality of informati... read more
I'd been to Monticello a few times before, and fell in love with it. I was a bit disappointed this time around. The self-guided tour just doesn't compare to having a guide give you all the little details about the house & President Jefferson that I wanted to know.
We experienced the beautiful home yesterday for my daughter's 4th grade field trip. Our guide was so amazing! He was very informative, interacted with the children wonderfully & had a great personality. I remember going there myself when I was her age & it is even more beautiful than I remember. I cannot wait to come back again!!
