You have to take the guided tour for the main floor of the house (not the self-guided tour because you won't learn as much on your own). You also want to take the additional guided tour offered for the rest of the house! Completely amazing! Also amazing is how Jefferson's Monticello II in Poplar Forest, VA is a smaller replica basically of this mansion.

Our visit to Monticello was everything we expected. Tour guides were knowledgeable and very pleasant. We experienced a bit of rain but it didn't keep us from touring the site. I recommend you add this to your 'must see' vacation destinations.
We did the kid friendly tour. It was the best tour out of all the places we went. The views were breathtaking and the facility was beautifully well kept. My family loved it.
Well organized and informative tours and staff and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The food in the cafe was good too!
