It just wasn't what I thought it would be the pictures on the internet looks much better and the decor was a bit tacky.
We paid $60 each to take the "behind the scenes" tour. It was worth twice that. I learned a lot about Jefferson, and I read a few books about him. Beautiful gardens, very friendly staff.
Amazing history, gorgeous views, and incredibly insightful docents and volunteers.
Just an amazing experience and made even more special by tyhe reenactment. The staff and volunteers could not have been kinder and appear to know all things Jefferrson and Monticello.
You need to plan on being here most of the day especially if they have special events going on when you visit. Spent 4 hours here not long enough to see everything. Took the house tour and on the day we went they also offer a tour of the upstairs for an additional $25 and it is well worth it. We had spent some time talking to a tour guide and she apologized that she wouldn't be our guide for the upstairs. At this point we still had an half hour wait for the next tour so we decided to look at the underneath part of the house.... read more
The guides were first rate. You find out just how complex of a man he was. The grounds are beautiful. Entrance fee supports a great cause.
My only recommendation is to have Thomas Jefferson move to the rear side of the house for the 3:00 meeting during spring and summer. We loved hearing him but sun was too hot to stay for entire speech
There is a lot good to say about Monticello. The Jefferson Society has done a great deal to revitalize the home of our third president. They still have a lot more to do, but that's a reason to go back. The latest efforts involve revitalizing the slaves' quarters and provide a bit of their history. They, like Jefferson, are forever linked to the home.
It was very disappointing there was no discount for veterans. I won't be coming back.
