About this business

Specialties We serve Angeleno style Mexican food in a lively atmosphere. We make all of our food and cocktails by hand, with fresh ingredients. We are one of the few restaurants that welcomes large parties. History Established in 2003. We are the antidote all the "big plate" Mexican restaurants in town. And a step up from the taco trucks, with a nice place inside to sit down and enjoy a cocktail with a few friends.

Glasses Half-Empty. – I've eaten at Malo a handful of times. Here's the skinny: The atmosphere is reasonably intimate; it's dark and low-key. The food is consistently amazing. The service consistently disappoints. If you want an incredible meal and a lonely, lack-lustre European dining experience, go to Malo; you will be left sitting - helpless and parched for as long as you wish. Ahh.............but when you leave, you'll fall asleep content and well-nourished, your dreams alive with friendly memories of a 'Salsa Flight'.

best margarita's - best chips - best frickin' salsa - service - eh... don't go on a weekend! – Ok. I've been to this place a dozen times and see the trash that gets written and totally disagree. I love the beef and pickle tacos !! I love the habernero salsa! I love the shrimp diablo and of course the margaritas. Always ask the price of the tequilla becuase they have really expensive tequilla!! Other dishes I love - chicken yucateco $10 and the corn!! And if you haven't had the carnitas al pastor they are to die for. Also, as... read more

Tacos and Tequila – With all the mexican restaurants in the area, I really super enjoy eating out here. Although it can sometimes be hard to get a seat right away without a reservation, It is worth the wait. There is a real comfortable bar adjacent to the restaurant which is usually pretty empty that you can sit and sip mojitos or margaritas at while you wait for your seat. They also, being a tequila bar, have more than like 150 kinda of tequila to try, and I think a pretty big selection of mezcals too. The tacos are good an... read more

Just Average - Slow Slow Slow – I've only been once, but I refuse to go back. I went at 8:00pm on a Tuesday, and it was empty but started to fill up right after I sat down. There were only two waiters, one for the inside, one for outside. They took orders based on who was closest to their computer, 6 groups that sat down after me ordered before me, I waited 20 minutes. The chips were good, because they were hot and fresh. If any other restaurant made fresh chips they would be the same. The salsas weren't special, and had min... read more

The other reviewers have lost their taste buds! – You know the restaurant is subpar when it can't even do salsa right. The hype definitely doesn't jive with the actual quality of the food. The portions were somewhat small. In terms of the food, the name of the restaurant is quite fitting (Malo!). The atmosphere can be romantic since it's very dim. Bottom line is that if you RECOGNIZE and ENJOY good food, you should not waste your time, money, and drive.

Great food and "priced to move" tequila shots and margaritas make for a happy marriage! – As an owner of a popular tequila, I have visited many fine restaurants in California for business. However, the one restaurant I keep going back to during my leisure time is Malo's for my favorites: their orginal and addictive Burnt Habaneros & Creme Fraiche Salsa, Ground Beef & Pickle Taco, "Indian curry-like" delicious, melt-in-your-mouth Carnitas al Pastor and the "one as good as the other" Shrimp Diablo or Shrimp Al Mojo De Ajo. As ... read more

Go for the Happy Hour – Go for the happy hour. I suggest the beef and pickle hard-shell tacos, the "Valiente" pack, which is a can of Tecate and a shot of Sauza for $5. Margaritas are good too, although they could be bigger. Yes you have to pay for the chips and salsa, but it's worth it. If you leave hungry, Pioneer Chicken is right up the road!

Not your father's mexican restaurant – Food is good but just like the rest of Silverlake, not very traditional. Good salsas, (make sure you ask for extra crispy chips). other appetizers are pretty much as advertised. The water is flavored with cucumber slices-sounds weird but is actually kinda nice. My favorite entree is the Cola/carnitas. The shrimp diabla is good but beware if tapatio is too hot for you. The bar is really fun but can get crowded very fast-also if you prefer eating at the bar-VERY loud. Excellent selection ... read more
