Bueno! – I love Malo! The chips and salsa are great. My faves are the habanero & creme fraiche and tomatillo & avocado. The corn on the cob is divine, awesome enchiladas and shrimp dishes. Overpriced and Overrated! – My fiance and I are always looking for good neighborhood eats, so we were excited to give Malo a try. Man, the service and portion sizes were so disappointing. The server couldn't explain what was in the dishes and it took forever for us to get seated and get our order taken. The portions were ridiculously small - it was like we ordered tapas at entree prices ($12 for 7 shrimp and two corn tortillas) None of the entrees came with rice/beans. Malo is not Malo – I finally went to this Silver Lake staple and I love it. The goat heads that greet you on the wall were so cool!!! The bar was hoppin' and the hard shell tacos were great. I didn't eat in the dining room since it was full, but the bar fun.
I don't agree with "just ok". – I think the beef taco with the pickle is unbelievable. My Dad keeps talking about how he wants to eat there when he comes to LA to visit. I also recommend the corn on the cobb special. I personally like my chips on the crispy side so I make sure to tell my server. I love the food and so does my entire family.
a great neighborhood spot – Great margaritas, amazing tacos, and a great bar and juke. Anyone who lives on the eastside and doesnt go to malo is missing out.
I think it's just average, too – Yeah, I don't know what everyone is raving about either. It's just OK. Nothing spectacular. The mojitos are decent, but quite small. The guacamole is good, but again it's nothing to rave about. I've been twice and people are always saying "Let's go to Malo, and I'm like again?". I have to like a place a lot to go often. There are just so many other mexican restaurants to try--why keep going back when you don't LOVE it?
i don't see what everyone likes – this place is a bummer. for some reason a few friends have had parties here and the service is always slow, the food does not fill you up so it is overpriced for such small portions and those lobster tacos that people seem to say are great are saltier than the dead sea and the lobster meat inside is grey! come on. they even charge for chips and salsa! at a mexican restaurant? what!
