Hertz is so strict about its policies and there is nothing you can do about it. Read the first 1-2 sentences of their debit card policies and you'll get the idea: https://www.hertz.com/rentacar/reservation/reviewmodifycancel/templates/rentalTerms.jsp?KEYWORD=PAYMENT&EOAG=LAX To 'qualify' to rent a car using a debit card: The renter (that's you) has to pick up the car. The late fee charge is completely predatory! We arrived early for our reservation and were accommodated. We extended our reservation for one day but the representative never told us when the car was due by or how much each hour would cost us. We paid nearly $400 for a 2 hour late fee, this was more than the cost of one day renting the car. There were plenty of cars available. This company is definitely a scam. They just overcharger me terribly. I paid ahead of time, but when I went to pick up my car, it didn't exist. I showed them my contract and they provided me with a different car at a higher price. They were likely taking advantage of me, knowing I would have to pay or be out of luck within the 5 min when they were about to close. Charged an additional $300 for "Vehicle Damage (Smoking)... I am not a smoker and NEVER have been. When receiving the car it was dirty and smelled to me like food had been sitting in the car for some time. I took the vehicle to be cleaned at a local car wash and a lighter and mcdonalds wrapper were found under the passenger seat of the vehicle. I just tried to rent a vehicle, Expedition Max, a Yukon XL or a 12 passenger van from our local Hertz location at the Helena, Montana Airport. I originally called on Saturday. The female at the location told me that she would have her manager call me first thing Monday morning ( this morning) to talk to me about rates and availability due to that she was new and didn't know. WORSE car rental company out there! I upgraded to a "luxury" car when I arrived at MSP airport. The upgrade was an additional $75/day but I was on vacation and headed to Northern Minnesota and approved the charge. The car was a piece of ****! The key fob battery was low - couldn't use the fob to lock the car. The back-up camera did not work, the OIL CHANGE REQUIRED light came on half way through my 10 day trip, the back driver rear end needed a new shock, and a full tire alignment was needed (the car shook like a German tank... read more

They cancelled my reservation two days before with not so much as a sorry. We had arranged to have someone fly to meet us and make a trip and they lost the cost of their flight. Their customer service agents lied to me saying their manager was in a "meeting" on two separate occasions. A company whose corporate structure shows the lack of integrity and commitment they have to their customers.

Hertz closed an airport location in Appleton WI without notifying customers with reservations. All other rental companies were out of cars by the time I arrived. Lost 1/2 a day trying to find a car within 30 miles and had to pay 4x my normal rate. Not a great way to treat a long time Presidents Circle customer. Have reached out several times to customer service for an explanation without a response... Unacceptable, Hertz... be better.
