In the early 1950's, mill worker Hysen Chelo purchased a piece of property as an investment. Hysen's four children thought that land investments were unwise and envisioned a restaurant on that site to support their growing families. Thus, Chelo's Hometown Bar & Grille was started in 1955. If you are looking to unwind after a long day .. don’t go sit at the bar here. Just tried to sit down at the bar and have a late dinner and a drink and waited 5 minutes before we decided to get up and leave because no one came up to us. The bartenders were too busy talking rather than serving their guests... guess I should have known it would be bad service when the 8 hostess up front did not greet us either.

Waitress Michayla was great. Very attentive. Food was tasteful & enough portion size to take a doggy bag home.
Attentive wait staff with great personalities. Food arrived at proper temperature and plated in an appealing way. Chelo’s is always a place to visit one or two times while visiting Rhode Island. The quality of service and food and drink have maintained a 5 star rating with me over the many,many years I have frequented the establishment.

I recently started to go to Chelos with my boyfriend, we’ve been 3 times this month alone. I am vegan and have become obsessed with the vegan sausage and peppers meal. I haven’t had any issues until last night. My boyfriend noticed pieces of steak mixed in with the peppers on my sandwich, obviously being vegan I did not eat it. It just worries me that steak got mixed in to a vegan meal, clearly the grills were not cleaned before preparing my order.
