The entire bar and restaurant is designed in dark, elegant wood with very stylish and comfortable furniture, chairs and booths--even the requisite fireplace--giving it a private club-like feeling. Beautiful multi-hued granite is used for the table tops and the bar, highlighting the overall design. I personally think that the food is way overpriced for what you get. I think they are catering to the rich horse people from the track to make their money. I spent nearly $25.00 (not including the tip) on an ice tea, a french dip sandwich and a side salad (that I had to order separately). Visited there last night, Hostess was friendly and our party of six were seated right away. The service was outstanding, she was right on top it, from our appetizer all the way thru dessert. The food was excellent with good portions. My kids commented it was the best steak and ribs they have ever eaten. We will definitely go back when we are in the Des Moines area. THANK YOU!!! After years of hearing how good this place is I was surprised how bad it was. Drinks were weak I would think with the price of the mediocre Quality meat you could get a decent drink. Beer selection left a lot to be wanted. And at $20 plus for meal homemade mashed potatoes would have been a lot better instead of bland instance potatoes.
Our family LOVES The Big Steer!!! It is our favorite place to go! In fact, we go at least once a month if not more. Always consistently good, always the best staff, and always a great time.
Hands down best food I have had in a long time! I had the broiled Shrimp, absolutely perfect! The creme brulee was absolutely amazing! Definitely something to drive 3 1/2 hours for!
Delicious prime rib! Was there on a busy Friday night and had excellent service.
Big Steer is one of the best places for well prepared beef in Iowa!
We ate there last night and everything was superb !!! The best prime rib I have ever eaten. Make sure you get the breaded mushrooms and the onion rings ! Service was top notch and everything came at just the right time. I will be back again soon !!!
Hands down the best place we've found to eat since moving to Iowa. Love the Big Steer!
