About this business

The Tavern restaurant in downtown Abingdon is a step back in time. Our beautiful old building was built in 1779 and is the oldest of Abingdon's historic structures. In its original inception, it was an overnight inn for stagecoach travelers, housing famous guests such as Henry Clay, King Louis Philippe of France, and President Andrew Jackson. In all its years, the Tavern has served as a post office, bank, general store, Civil War hospital, private home, bakery, and, of course, a tavern. Today, German native and U.S. Air Forc... read more

Our go to place for special occasions. Yesterday was my birthday and we had our favorite, the stuffed filet mignon with the green beans. This is the best food that will ever touch your lips. I would highly recommend this place for the food, the hospitality and for the experience of dining in a piece of history.

We just left from dinner and was very disappointed. We came the first time in May of 2016 and it was awesome, however this time not so much. The pasta I got with scallops was like watered down spaghetti sauce and my husbands steak was covered with a way too sweet sauce. The service seemed very rushed. We spent way too much money for that dinner.

Had a great dinner. Dessert was phenomenal, we had vanilla bean crème brûlée. Must try! The only issue I really have with the place but isn't a deal breaker is that we were seated next to a door in December and it was VERY drafty. Also, depending on your seating and that determines how much lighting you'll have to read the menu. I've been known you use my phone for light. The owner is incredibly hospitable and charming.
