The Pit

4.2

About this business

The Pit offers some of the best barbecue in Raleigh. Set in a restored early 20th Century meatpacking warehouse, the restaurant carries on the North Carolina barbecue tradition by serving full-hog, pit-cooked pork, and other barbecue essentials. But The Pit is more than a generic barbecue restaurant: it combines the generous portions of classic meat-loving joints with some surprises. The pork is free-range, and guests can enjoy barbecued tofu, wines, cocktails, and a comprehensive list of bourbons.

Parking is hard! But if you want good food and a cool atmosphere this place is it. It’s right downtown. We happened upon the Bluegrass Festival (didn’t realize because we’re only here for a day) which made it that much more fun. Lots of food choices. Service was a little slow but it’s because they are busy. I don’t mind slow when the ambience is that relaxed and comfortable. Good system where they text you when your table is ready.

This place has regressed over the last year, extremely fatty brisket, dry Mac n cheese, dry pulled pork. Pretty disappointed.

My experience was great, service was good, food was hot and delicious. I had a lot of fun, people always try to compare food to other places they have eaten and be disappointed when restaurant food don’t taste like another restaurant go figure. I will return.

Heard a lot of good things about this place so took the family and guests there tonight for early dinner. Overall was not impressed. My chopped and pulled BBQ plate was good, but nothing I would consider special or deserving of the praise I had read. My wife got brisket and it was dry and not very flavorful. She didn't eat it all as she enjoyed her sides much more than the brisket. For the price we paid and for all the glowing reviews I had read, I expected to have really great barbecue. We didn't. So I rated this 3 stars. G... read more
