After several years of chronic back pain, I started up with Dr. Hughes as a second set of doctors after moving to the area. I follow all instructions such as getting additional MRI’s, blood work, etc. After telling me that I was “not a surgical case,” Dr. Hughes effectively left me in the dust without any treatment options. If you do not suspect to be a “surgical case,” find a different doctor.

Dr. Hughes was excellent, very knowledgeable and dealt with a number of medical issues and explained them. He also provided me with some referrals to other specialists to address non-ortho issues, a very helpful thing to do. He is very personable and cares about what he does and the patient's well being. He also listens carefully to what I said about my medical issues .. He is a 5 out of 5 for sure.

Great spine surgeon. Been using him for 20 years. Great bedside manner. “How can I help you” attitude.

Dr. Hughes is a 5+ star surgeon. My MRI readings for years exceeded two pages as a result of a number of helicopter crashes in VN. Dr. Hughes didn’t talk much, but quickly ran me through some dexterity tests, inquired on how long I was on the mobility scooter and allowed that as a surgeon he had two objectives for me—pain relief and regaining my mobility. He also allowed as a 77 year old with existing medical conditions, I was high-risk. He informed me I had impingement of my nerves, which needed to be treated quickly. Prior... read more

I had two spine surgeries in two days with Doctor Hughes. He did my L5/S1 from the front on Tuesday in July 2019 and the L4/L5 on Wednesday. Surgery went like a charm and I made an easy and full recovery. I strongly suggest that you consult. Two years before, I saw him and he accurately diagnosed my issues but counseled other treatment. That worked for the two years very well, but my degenerative condition degenerated (LOL). I am really happy with the entire Ortho VA operation, but Hughes is solid.

Yes Dr Hughes can be backed up and yes perceptions can be his visits are short and to the point BUT he is very professional and an expert at diagnosis. He also takes a welcomed conservative approach to your medical issues. I suffered for years with sciatic pain which got worse shooting down my legs and buttocks with numbness in my feet. After an MRI and CT scan DR Hughes recommended a 3 stage laminectomy at L3,4,5 and S1. The surgery was a huge success and I'm now pain free at 67. Playing golf and working out. Able to perfor... read more
