If you don't mind waiting............. – Excellent food, long wait time (but well worth it!), and huge portions of food. The waiters/waitresses are courteous and are pretty accurate with their estimates on how long things will take (i.e. wait times to be seated, how long the food will take, etc.).

OH MY GOD – If you like sushi this place is a must. The pieces of sushi are about 3 times the size of any other. The prices are the same also. If you are a sushi lover there really is no other place for a great meal. The sushi was so huge I could not pick it up with chop sticks. I could only eat half of what I ordered and I am a big guy.

Go for sushi not the ambience – The sushi is some of the best we've had. The sushi rice is great , the fish incredibly fresh, portions monsterous, space cramped, service funky but prompt. I've come here for over 15 years and Saburos has always had incredibly fresh fish and huge portions. The "Sushi Nazi" attitude has actually mellowed over the past few years but service and ambience/wait are still probably at the bottom of the Saburo list of reasons to go to eat at Saburos.

It's worth it – If you have patience, and are a kind person, you will definitely have a benefiting experience. The wait is long and the service is... not the best. But KILL THEM WITH KINDNESS and you'll be treated with kindness. First visit we ordered Maguro, typically deep pink, this time light pink, (fattier part of the steak). We didn't like it, in fact, they took it OFF the bill! Second visit (a week later) we asked for the leaner part of the steak and we received it, it was EXCEPTIONAL... Melt in your mouth EXCEPTIONAL!... read more

Quantity, not quality, rules at Saburo's – This is the place to fill yourself up on cheap sushi. But only if you don't have an aversion to chlorine--the entire restaurant smells like it was hosed down in bleach. Even the tea cups smelled like bleach: after taking a whiff of my tea I decided to order a bottle of beer instead. The miso soup was far too salty and the tempura was thick and chewy. The sushi was sloppy and the fish looked old. It tasted that way, too. Granted, I left the restaurant with a full stomach and not too ... read more

Not all it's cracked up to be. – The sushi is not 'wonderful' as some people are stating. It is average and sometimes disappointingly below average, and my average is based on having sampled sushi at other restaurants in Portland (not some exotic locale.) It's not nearly as well prepared as some other sushi restaurants in Portland. It'll regularly take the majority of the meal to get the servers to give you tea or more water. I'm not planning on going back except maybe for the novelty.

Cheap thrills are just that....cheap – You can take my word for this based on my own experience, or you can critically read the other reviews on here and take them together as a lump. Will you like Saburo's? Ask yourself which is more important to you - quality, or quantity? If you like bang for your buck, you'll think you died and went to heaven. If you truly like sushi and enjoy food, you'll be miserable. Quite simply, the people that rave about Saburo's rave about it because the food is BIG and CHEAP. Few, very, very few,... read more

Bigger ain't always better – Someone asked, "since when is bigger not better?" That is like saying, "PBR is better, because you get more beer for your dollar than a local microbrew." The inexplicable high ratings for Saburo's wouldn't bother me so much if this wasn't the kind of criteria that was being used in judging them as the "best" in the city by many local diners, even some magazines, newspapers. Add the frequently rushed and rude service. Add the fact the the sushi is often a day or two stale and sloppily assembled. I... read more

UNBELIEVABLY RUDE! – By the attitude these people display, you'd think they were dispensing cancer cures as opposed to the meidocre sushi they sling. Have been there twice and have found the service beyond abrupt to the point of unnecessarily rude. The sushi was fresh, but look like the sushi I've made at home...fish looks like it was cut with a machete and the nigiri and rolls fall apart. Sushi rice was also too sweet. It is however, cheap. You get hwat you pay for I guess. Will never go there again!
