Not the best sushi in town! – Saburo does not have the best sushi in Portland. It does have the largest portions and cheapest sushi prices in Portland, which explains the lines. Except for the unagi, I do not recommend any of the nigiri sushi from saburo as their sushi grade meat is not of the highest quality (my wife and I have both had gristle in the sake). Stick with maki or temaki sushi and you'll be fine. The temura is also really good. The service is a bit curt and the wait is rediculous. If you want high quality nigir... read more
I don't believe the hype – Don't get me wrong, a lot of my friends love Soburo's and think it's the best sushi in town. However, I have given this place two regrettable chances and I don't understand why people like it so much. First and foremost, the 1+ hour wait is ridiculous. This successful restaurant might want to consider expanding their buisiness. Secondly, huge chunks of fish, to me, do not taste good. The unagi is massive and just isn't tasty when cut in a large piece. I'm not a sushi expert, but to me it makes more... read more
No other sushi compares!! – Best Sushi hands down. Wonderful serevice every time. Prompt and polite servers and the sushi bar is an interactive experience no matter how busy they are. There is something for everyone at Saburo's and the bill always satisfies. I love seeing a first timer at Saburo's face when they recieve their order. The food is always fresh and the fish excellent. Out of alll sushi houses I've had the pleasure of, this one is stilll my favorite. The negative reviews of this place are not true. You must try b... read more
Size Doesn't Matter – I was originally drawn to Saburo's by tales of their huge proportions-and yes, it is true. The Unagi was bigger than my cell phone, each piece was about 2-3 times the size of your normal sushi! I tried about 8 different kinds of sushi (from Unagi to Hamachi, several rolls, etc.) and sunomomo (ocotpus and shrimp), but I'd have to say that it was only okay. The quality of the fish was not very good; it was too warm, not fresh at all and the sushi easily fell apart. The size made it tough to handle-and I w... read more
Sushi at it's best in Portland – Saburo is simply the best sushi in town. Extra large cuts of fresh fish and rice (sumeshi) that is almost always just right. Sure tha wait is long, but it's always well worth it. If you know your sushi, this is one of 3 top places to be in Pdx.
2 strikes - No more Saburo! – This "used" to be a good spot for sushi.... BUT it's not worth waiting in line for an hour, walking passed the smelly kitchen to be squished in the noisy back room. Good value is only good if the product is quality - this fish is not. We won't be going to Saburo anymore.
Largest, fresh nigiri/sashimi EVER. Order to-go? – This is my favorite sushi bar in Portland (Shiro's in belltown Seattle and Fujiya's in Tacoma being the other top three in the Pacific NW, IMHO). I've eaten sushi in probably 100 different restaurants in the country, and this sushi ranks amongst the best. Hands-down the largest nigiri I've ever had, and despite one obviously bitter/angry reviewer (maybe he should have snacked before arriving), it's actually some of the freshest as well. Obviously, avoid sushi anymore on Mond... read more
super-size me – Not impressed! The sushi was huge, and not in a good way. Sushi, if anything is something i strive for quality not quantity. To me, just another cheap sushi joint. Fish is poor quality, not tasty. I'd rather spend 5 more dollars and enjoy my sushi.
Excellence Sushi! Long wait time. – I always go to Saburo when I am really craving for some real sushi. The portions are huge as mentioned in a lot of the reviews. The Unagi ( eel ) is to die for. Most of the time the fish is fresh, I only have once or twice bad experience when the food doesnt look too fresh. The wait is definitely worth it. Normally, I will just wait down my name. Estimate how long the wait is going to be and take a walk at the neighborhood. Starbucks is just around the corner. If you have only 2 people, th... read more
