Totally overrated – My first experience at Saburo's was disappointing. Our friend's have been raving about this place for months and we finally went there for dinner the other night. Our friends warned us about the wait which was, at first, not a big deal. We waited at Kay's, a great little bar across the street and had a few beers. After an hour and a half, we went back over to Saburo's and there was still no table for us. Twenty minutes later we were seated in the back of this tiny, terribly lit dining area that smelled of... read more
I don't understand the hype! – I don't understand the fascination with this place. It is all myth. Some of you talk about charm and real sushi. First, this is just another American Sushi place, better than some worse than others. The part that makes this place particularly bad is the pieces are 2-3 bites. That is not sushi, a piece should be a large mouthful. Who likes to see rice falling out of your mouth because you can't put the whole thing in it. Second, while you wait they try to wisk you out of the place within 30 min ... read more
What kind you are – I used to live in Portland and fell in love with Saburo's. It has completely spoiled me for any other sushi place (I have tried a lot in different cities). I make a point to go there when I am in town because it is so unique. After reading some of the poor reviews of the place, I just wanted to share that if you are one of those people who has to dine in elegance and have some overpriced piece of sushi at some L.A.-imitation sushi place, then SKIP SABURO's and GOOD RIDDANCE to you! The stuff that some of ... read more
The Japanese only WISH Tokyo sushi was this good! – I have traveled the world. I have had some great sushi. Saburo's is the only reason I travel to Portland from Bend. So the atmosphere is not so great? Good! Keeps the Lake Oswego crowd away. Be sure to try the freshest 'uni' on the West Coast! Be careful not to order too much as the portions are huge!
Huge Portions, Very Fresh, Very Cheap – Pros cheap fresh and tasty good selection huge portions friendly staff cons smells a bit like a fish market, but hey, it's sushi!!!! could be a long wait Went late at night with some buddies and didn't have to wait (hear the lines get long), we ordered too much, if it is your first time, order HALF of what you normally do. The staff was awesome and let us stay later than we should have. Highly recommended.
American-style sushi – The fish is fresh, but the portions are ridiculous and the wait is far too long. You literally cannot pick up the sushi with your chopsticks, it's that big! If you're stuck in Sellwood and craving sushi, it's a good bet, but if the line is wrapped around the block, skip it.
Eat here only if you're broke – After years of hearing raves about this place, I was highly disappointed. Granted, I'm from Hawaii and have high expectations/standards when it comes to sushi. The portions were huge and the prices were cheap, which is great, BUT.... One half of my table got their food a 1/2 hour before us, the miso soup came at the end of the meal, and in addition of the wait time of about one hour, we were inside for about two hours. Now, I love a nice relaxing leisurely meal, but this was just slow. I mean ... read more
My favorite sushi restaurant. – People from all over the region go to Saburo's for the sushi. That is the only problem that I have with the place, it's not big enough and there is always a line to get in. It IS worth the wait, however. The quality AND quantity is excellent, especially for the price. If only i could get seated a little quicker....
Big Slices of Fish but that's where it ends... – Yes you get gigantic cuts of fish on your sushi but thats where the flavor and fanfare should end. First of all fresh fish is what you get at most sushi places (they use the same suppliers) so that shouldn't be a bonus but a necessity when visiting sushi places. The rolls are huge but have so much rice that you lose the other flavors. The service is rushed and lacking. Forget about getting another drink. Also the wait is always long.
