Mexican food is often confused with Tex-Mex. Not so at Hugo's. Award-winning Chef Hugo Ortega offers your taste buds a culinary tour of Mexico. From the beaches of Baja California, open your palate with the refreshing limey goodness of his ever-popular red snapper ceviche. Explore the complex and earthy duck in molé poblano sauce or the delicacy of pan sautéed chapulines. Roam the streets of Mexico City with a sampler plate of sopesitos. Wash it all down with flights of the finest tequila.

Mole Madness – I was turned on to Hugo's by their sister restaurant Backstreet Cafe. Backstreet is probably my favorite place to dine in Houston, so I figured their involvment here had to be good. This certainly turned out to be true, while the service isn't as caring as Backstreet it was still very nice. The food was outstanding, I tried 3 different Mole sauces during my meal and each one was better than the next. The Mole Poblano was off the charts with this chocolate edge and really complex aroma. The most pleasant surpri... read more
User review by g16 – although some servings were small, the taste and preparation were excellent...the decor is nice and the atmosphere is relaxed and eclectic...i would definitely try this place again and recommend it to friends.
Delicious! – This place is so good. I've been here twice for brunch and the food and service has been consistent. Yes, it is a little pricey, of course but it's definately worth it.
Seasonal Menu – I just visited Hugo's over the weekend for a nice, after noon lunch with an old friend. The outside patio is private and adorable. You can't even hear the street noise from Westeimer. The service was wonderful! The managers Alfredo and Victor are friendly and knowledgeable. Last, but not least, the food was great. The seasonal menu has many great offerings. Try the fish of the day - it's excellent!
Nice place, average food, bad service – The place is esthetically nice but too loud. However, the service is pretty bad. The waiter did not talk to me. He just talked to my boyfriend (explained to him what the specials were, etc.) and never looked at me or asked me! I ordered a margarita and he asked my boyfriend is I wanted it on the rocks! I felt as if I was in the 1500 chauvinist environment! Food is average.
Peerless – Yep, I love Tex-Mex, and I ain't ashamed to admit it. When it's done with care and attention to detail, I defy anyone to find better "comfort food." But don't confuse Tex-Mex with Mexican food. Since I've already stated that I love Tex-Mex, I cannot be accused of snobbery, but with little aside, Tex-Mex and Mexican food are pretty much mutually exclusive. So, ignore the loutish reviews of the "where were the chips and hot sauce?" and "no nachos? No thanks!" stripe and visit Hugo's with an open mind, where said min... read more
Great Restaurant – The food and margaritas are amazing. We moved from Houston 5 years ago and tried it after some friends recommended it. We contemplated moving back over dinner. I'm glad they don't serve chips and salsa. The menu is too good to get full on that garbage.
excellent! – This is our favorite restaurant in Houston. We've been to Hugo's many times and although our visits are usually spaced quite far apart (we don't live in houston) the manager always remembers us and where our "usual table" is. That helps, of course, but even without that this is the best Mexican food we've had outside of Mexico. It's not your usual tacos and fajitas, but creative, more gourmet cuisine, and it's not tex-mex (we view that as a positive thing!). The margharitas are outstanding. It's not cheap, but i... read more
very dissapointing.... – I am from Mexico City, I love to cook and my family owned one of the best restaurants in Mexico City always ranked on the Top 10 Best restarants in the whole Country for many years..I heard that Hugo's was a great place to eat an authentic mexican..I went there beliving so..but when I saw the kind of food they had I knew it wasn't real authentic like they claim to be! ! I went with another mexican friend of mine, we were both shocked and ofended with this montrosus place! in Mexico we know how to eat... read more
