Not so tasty. – The food was written up very elegantly in the menu...only to lead up to the disappointment in your mouth. The service was fine. I would not recommend it.

Put the hostess out of her misery! – The food at Hugo's is really good. The Cabrito is simply fantastic, and the ceviche appetizer is succulent. The wine list is great with some very interesting selections. The service is somewhat erratic which you can deal with since it is at least sincere. However, after having eaten there, I called to make a subsequent reservation and got the absolute worst L.A. trash service from the hostess/ Reservations agent. Get real, this is Houston, we don't do "attitudy" cool, we do easy good. So ... read more

Average – If you had asked me to describe the food at Hugo's before I went, I would have been right on -- it was predictable "Mexican Backstreet Cafe." Atmosphere was okay -- loud -- but could have been much louder, the restaraunt was only half full. Be prepared to valet park. There is no self-park lot and the valet even put out cones to reserve spots on the public street so that you can't park there either without a long walk. I thought the food was okay, but I feel there a many better places in Houston to eat "regional Mex... read more

Trendy Food... yes; Good Service... no. – The bar menu is pretty cool. The food menu had some interesting choices but none that sounded good to me. The beans and other sides were cold. If you want chips, you have to ask for them... No freebies here. Finally, the service was horrible. It took over 20 minutes to just get the bill so we could leave.

Wonderful! – This was a great dining experience. Hugo's has nothing but energy pumping through its veins. The food is really very good. The crabmeat ceviche appetizer was out of this world. Some of the entrees were a little overboard, but the chili rellenos were exceptional. The Hugo Rita's are the best in the city! The greatest part, of course, was the homemade, full fat ice cream. Wow! I do have to admit the service was a little lacking at times, but when the servers were at the table, they were very attentive. I will defi... read more

A great lunch – Make a meal out of the appetizers...that's what the table next door did. We only had one, sopa-something and fantastic. Chile releno and encheladas were good...just distracted by that spread at the table next door. Highly recommended for those burned out on our traditional "Texmex".

Overrated, but Tries Hard--Too Hard – Yes, the atmosphere is nice, the menu interesting, and the wine and tequila list exhaustive, however, Hugo's seems overrated from our experience on a Sunday night. To get to the menu items you must navigate through numerous pages of wines and tequilas (we found this obnoxious), and once you were actually able to read about the food--you find that the dishes listed are tempting, but almost tries too hard. Everything is quite nouvelle cuisine-sounding. The service was absolutely terrible. ... read more

Terrific food – We were seated promptly, somewhat before the hordes on a Sat. evening. The food was really the star here - great appetizers and the main courses. The tacquitos were excellent as an appetizer and the chile relleno was good as main. They have a good drink and wine list. The wines are only 2 times the retail price. Nice ambiance. Our server was OK but she was hard to hear and a little tentative about food questions.

Serious Mexican – The building drew us in - neat old warehouse in the Montrose area. The decor and atmosphere were appealing - mucicians in a balcony, not overbearing, but a nice backdrop. Great tequila selection, but wait staff pressured us to drink wine, not a margarita - trying to break the Mexican food/Margarita connection, but why? Another break from traditional expectations - no chips/salsa - but nice pepitas. Entrees were fine, with interesting flavors. Cafe de olla - cinnamon coffee was great afterwards.
