Mexican food is often confused with Tex-Mex. Not so at Hugo's. Award-winning Chef Hugo Ortega offers your taste buds a culinary tour of Mexico. From the beaches of Baja California, open your palate with the refreshing limey goodness of his ever-popular red snapper ceviche. Explore the complex and earthy duck in molé poblano sauce or the delicacy of pan sautéed chapulines. Roam the streets of Mexico City with a sampler plate of sopesitos. Wash it all down with flights of the finest tequila.

Well, I like it – I liked it. Atmosphere great. Location great. Drinks great. My partner and I eat out at a LOT of restaurants in Houston and we have also dined in large cities all over the country including New York city. I believe I know what I'm talking about when I say this is great Mexican cuisine. I was never seated badly and the wait staff was always attentive. The only con is that the lighting is so low you have to strain to see the menu. I never use valet parking because I don't like other people driving my car, but... read more
Bad Service – First of all, DO NOT make online reservations. I had a reservation through open table, brought the print out and everything. The hostess took the print out, and there we stood, waited 20 mins to find out they had no clue they took reservations this way. We waited a total of 45 mins after our reservation time. For the price, the waiter should've been a little more involved, but just did the basics, brought the food, never refilled drinks, never asked about dessert, then left the check. The sad thing is, the food... read more
Health Inspection Failed – I have been to Hugo's on several occasions. I paid for the best and found out today I received the worst. Channel 11 News just aired a "dirtiest restaurants in Houston" special and Hugo's was on it for health code violations. Being a former prosecutor for the city and knowing alot about these violations made my stomach turn even more. I cannot believe I trusted them to prepare food that was put into my family members mouths. Simply put, aweful and a hazard to your health.
Rude valet to annoying mamager! – I was told that my spouse and I would enjoy this place, but from the start with the valet it was awful, then to go in and complain to a female manager who barely spoke English and defends the valet for trying to charge me when there's no sign anywhere that there's a fee to valet!?!? Go figure, needless to say, they should have managers that are a bit more concerned with what the client has to say, and that can communicate readily. I would not go back.
if you can't make it to mexico city, go to hugo's – yummy, yummy, yummy! I just ate there last night for my anniversary and it was delicious as usual. The cabrito is the best, the beans are delicious....I don't know how they put so much flavor in them. If you like smokey mescal then you have to try the Oaxacan margarita. Oh, and the hot chocolate is the best I've ever had, and I don't even usually like hot chocolate.
Just the Best! – As a native Houstonian I've grown up loving Mexican food. I love it all: Tex-Mex, Mexican, Cali-Mex (although not Mexican, I even love Spanish tapas). I love the sting and fire of all the different types of chilis and the smooth as silk cheeses. I have been to several taquerias and high-end Mexican fare eateries, alike. I usually have something good to say about every one of them even if I didn't love everything on my plate. Then there's Hugo's. Even if I wanted to, I couldn't find anything to complain about... read more
Worst Mexican Ever – OK - so I have been here three times. Every time I have been the hostess has been surly and has managed to find the worst seat in the restaurant (two out of three it was next to the bathrooms), in spite of their being plenty of seats open. The food was bland, and quite frankly lacking in flavor, and the service was abysmall, I had to ask for more water twice, the waiter never did the "check back", and he frankly lied to us telling us that everyone was ordering the grasshoper appetizer (we heard him say t... read more
Authentic Mexican Food and Charm – If you want top-notch food, margaritas, service, culture, and ambiance - Hugos is the place for you. From the moment you step in you feel as if you have entered a Mexican hacienda. The Mexican-inspired decor and ambiance delightfully compliment the delicious entrees. To start, you should have a Margarita to cool you off from the Houston heat. For your appetizer choose guacamole and salsa (chips and salsa are not included - this is a tex-mex thing - but order them, they are great) And you mu... read more
The opposite of Felix – Upscale Mexican, full of happening chic people and very good at slinging drinks. This place has a great menu selection, good location, that ridiculous forced valet parking, and is overall a great spot to try.
