Like many other complaints here my 3rd party cartridges were voided when I did a firmware update. Of course, there was no warning this would happen so the (expensive) lesson here is never update your software or firmware. I hope a class-action suit starts somewhere. I did complain to the WA State AG who contacted Epson who responded with 5 pages of documents warning the buyer of the need to buy only Epson ink. Bought defective ink from a reseller of theirs (Best Buy). Best Buy nor Epson will refund or exchange my money for their defective product. I deal in computer services and will not resell or manage this product again.
Printer was working fine until they forced me to download a firmware update. Now the printer won't recognize my ink. Customer service is unhelpful. Their position is against the law (the First Sale Doctrine among others). Now I own a $240 brick.
I bought a WF-2850 at Walmart OCTOBER XX XXXX. It worked great with 3rd party ink. February 13th it did a firmware update that rendered my ink useless and printer useless. Customer service state can not roll back update and no trouble shooting unless I have your expensive less filled ink. I own the printer but Epson sent update with no warning of 3rd party ink issues that is now keeping me from using the printer I own and the ink I paid for. This should be against the law. Epson has a horrible business model of extortion.
Got a firmware update to my printer and now my cartridges are not recognized. Really irritating not a person that prints a lot so just bought whatever Walmart had and they worked great till the update.. so disappointing.. no one should by a epson printer
After weeks of seeing the "Firmware Update Available" message regretably I did it. Immediately lost all print capabilities due to aftermarket inks. Epson says that the solution is to use only over priced Epson ink. I am out over $120 in ink that I bought and that worked before the firmware update as well as the $60 for a useless printer. Terrible company! Do not buy their junk!
I'm another victim of the firmware update scam described below. I replaced all ink cartridges with compatible brand -- carefully checked for reputation, I might add -- just before the latest firmware update was pushed through, and now the printer in effect is saying, "Welcome to the new Epson ink monopoly that oh, by the way, we didn't warn you about. Last two printers I have had are Epson and both use color ink when printing ONLY b&w. Epson does not tell customers this and puts draconian measures on ink cartridges so you can't use anything else but Epson. And because of this, MANY TIMES my Epson cartridges have failed. I spent $130 and $150 on both printers and over $400 on ink cartridges (which still don't work and will not print anything)! I will NEVER use this criminal company again!
Epson provides no help when their garbage products fail. I have contacted them many times and all of their customer service representatives fail to help and are very rude.
