Many believe that Abe Doumar, founder of Doumar's Cones & Barbecue, gave the world its first ice cream cone. Doumar was a traveling salesman retailing paperweights at the famous St. Louis World's Fair in 1904. When an ice cream seller exhausted his stock of paper dishes to hold the ice creams, he got a nearby waffle maker to roll his waffles into cones and thus invented the waffle cone. We drove almost 9 hours from Massachusetts specifically to Virginia to eat at Doumars on our way to Florida. Food was delicious and the shakes and ice cream sodas were to die for. However, it was very crowded indoors (Saturday night at 7pm) and very messy to eat the double meat BBQ Minced Pork sandwich with no plates to rest the sandwich on or to catch all the meat that rolls down your chest onto the table.
