Many believe that Abe Doumar, founder of Doumar's Cones & Barbecue, gave the world its first ice cream cone. Doumar was a traveling salesman retailing paperweights at the famous St. Louis World's Fair in 1904. When an ice cream seller exhausted his stock of paper dishes to hold the ice creams, he got a nearby waffle maker to roll his waffles into cones and thus invented the waffle cone. Love the food and service!�
Doumar’s can do no wrong in my book. Aside from being too stingy with that fabulous crushed ice, their service is always spot on, the food is hot and tasty and I’m in and out in under an hour. It’s my happy place.
Doumar’s is a Norfolk landmark with good reason. Delicious sandwiches, amazing limeade, freshly made ice cream cones, comfortable environment, friendly staff, thick shakes, history, all at low prices.
The BBQ sandwich was much lacking in flavor and was very dry. I had it with slaw (which was very little) and even with their sauce, had no flavor. Should have gone to CookOut across the street for BBQ sandwich. The butter pecan icecream in their homemade cone made a good finish tho....
We stopped at Doumar's for breakfast before our flight out based on what we saw on TV while we were in Williamsburg. We had a peach shake and a orange shake with two breakfast sandwiches and after we had eaten we thought why not have ice cream cones, too. Everything is great and nostalgic and delicious. The handmade cone was crispy and wonderful. I am really picky about cones and typically just eat the ice cream and throw away the cone, but this time the cone was as much as a treat as the ice cream. I absolutely love coming here. This was my parents “Hang out” in the ‘50’s while they were in high school. I first started coming here regularly when I was based out of Norfolk while I was in the Navy back in the late ‘70’s. Although some of the faces have changed, the food has maintained Mr. Doumar’s highest standards and the courtesy of the staff has always been top notch!!! I look forward to coming here for a very long time.
I was so excited to hear that they had Taylor pork roll and cheese. I'm originally from New Jersey Pennsylvania area. The only place you can really get Taylor pork roll is in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Doumar's was a very big disappointment pork roll was cut paper thin and then doubled over. It was served with processed cheese spread slices that's not even American cheese. There was really no flavor the rolls were not real fresh and just not great.
