Editorial fromCarnivores go for the slow-cooked brisket, links and baby-backs at this top Portland barbecue joint. The heat level is calibrated as you like it, but the flavors remain smoky and pungent no matter what your level of fire tolerance. The…

barbeque – For many many years this was my favorite barbecue joint. I even pretty much gave up barbecuing at home, and got food to go from Campbells. The restaurant currently provides okay lackluster barbecue food, but a shadow of what was offered in former years. Quality and quanity have significantly declined. Sauces and sides are modest in flaver and presentation. I might try dropping by again a couple of times in the future, to see if the old Campbell resurfaces.
Good Food Gone Bad – This used to be the place for great BBQ, not anymore. I went there this week and got take out. The ribs were on the dry side, the brown sugar BBQ sauce tasted like sweet vinager, and the potato salad had too much mustard. The only thing that tasted good was the cornbread and the pinto beans. I will being going elsewhere for my BBQ fix.
horrible customer service, dirty, long wait – The minute I walked in I noticed that it was little dumpy looking, but there are a lot of great places to eat in portland that dont happen to look great. There wasn't a line to be seated and many waiters and possibly the owner walked past several times. After about 10 minutes we were offered 2 chairs at the end of a large table that mostly covered with dirty dishes and leftovers from the previous party. I explained that I wanted a clean table for two and he barely understood me a... read more
A wood-burning barbecue churns out Southern soul-food worthy of the trek up Powell. – In Short Outside, there's a large sign depicting owners Mary and Felton Campbell holding a plate of ribs. Inside, sauce-proof industrial carpeting, Formica tables and simply framed reviews and awards prove that food comes before finery. Meat dishes like the tender beef ribs, hearty brisket and grilled chicken include a choice of two sides like the tangy potato salad, sweet coleslaw and homemade cornbread.
Not the same Campbell's we know and loved – After hearing Campbell's changed hands we had to go see if it was the same. We were very dissapointed. The pork ribs and sauce was still great but the sides, pintos, greens and cornbread were not right. Pintos were missing a key ingredient smelled great but not the same, greens were tough and cornbread was heavy. The service was poor and the place was not crowded. Overall we miss the old Campbell's. I hope the new owners are just getting a slow start and they can get it together.
Texas Style Barbecue – Being from the south I wasn't sure what to expect. I heard it had good barbecue. My husband hates these ventures with me as I'm hard to please. I have to say that everything was delicious. My favorite was the pork ribs, they fell off the bone. I also had beef brisket, awesome. I had pinto beans (good with the cornbread) and potato salad as my sides. I don't remember having to wait, I was more concerned about the food, the gentleman who took my order said the pork is tender and I had to trust him if I w... read more
Thank goodness, still the same. – I have been a regular for many years now, come in at least once a month. I had heard about the ownership changning and was reluctant to go. Thought it had definitely changed, but after waiting a little while, due to me being busy lately, I went back. I saw two servers that were the same and they assured me that the food is the same. Said that the cook/baker has been there and is still there for sixteen years now. It was pretty busy since i went friday night but the wait wasn't too bad. I got... read more
good food gone bad – Just went to Campbell's last night. Before, I touted this as the greatest BBQ in Portland. Now, with the new owners, the pork ribs are tough and chewy, the brisket is lifeless, and the sausage, the best thing on the menu, has changed recipes and is awful. The sauce isn't even the same. Don't even bother going. It's over priced chinese food now.
Timeliness of food – This has been a favorite of ours, but we hadn't visited in a year. When we ate there recently, we were very disappointed with the service. Although the food is outstanding, the side dishes were all served and then we waited another half our for the meat to arrive. We have talked to others who had the same experience. We will probably not be returning.
