Exxon is a longtime funder of climate change denial groups and has used its influence to attack climate science and scientists. Now the company is under investigation from attorneys general in several states, and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is opening up their own federal investigation. The AGU should be standing up for climate science, not Exxon.
I'm a physician and for years we've worked hard to limit pharma and industry influence over us. As a physician and a researcher, I am very disappointed that the AGU will continue to allow Exxon sponsorship. Wow. Talk about a MAJOR conflict of interest. Your board of directors should be ashamed of itself.
Do you really need to take dirty money from Exxon to promote an agenda that should be trying to save our planet? More than disappointing, sad and misguided.
The American Geophysics Union has clearly decided to disregard its own internal policy at the cost of its integrity. You're woefully naive to think that a dialogue with the fossil fuel industry will result in action on climate change. We have seen time and time again that Exxon has known the facts on climate and yet decided to act in it's own short term financial interests --- putting humanity at risk. Simply put, the AGU's actions will be shown to be on the wrong side of history.
