Excellent doctor and surgeon. My high school age son was referred to Dr. Hughes for surgery. Dr. Hughes performed lumbar discectomy (L5 and S1) in the summer between high school graduation and college with absolutely no complications and a minimal scar. Now, 5 years later, my son has graduated college with no back issues! We are eternally grateful to him.

Waited for over an hour to see Dr. Hughes and described all spine and back issues in medical forms. Doctor came in the room without looking at the patient: "What's going on?" He spent 5 min on a patient, did not offer any explanations on the back issue, showed no care to help more. Walked away from an appointment with an impression as this is one self centered doctor. What a waste of time.

I like the last review- " I have no words for how I was treated." That sums up my experience but I have words !!!! Patients come to you and expect to be treated like a decent human being. Spinal conditions and incredibly debilitating and can leave patients in extreme pain if not diagnosed and treated correctly. If you value your life and want a doctor to help you then you will not go to Stephen Hughes.

Dr. Hughe's expertise and compassionate care gave me back a life worth living. I had spinal stenosis and scoliosis. After he repaired those conditions with fusions of C3-C6 and from L2 down, was able to resume work and my favorite pursuits. He earned five stars and my eternal gratitude.

I would not recommend him to anyone. Poor bedside manner and does not want to deal with you unless you opt for surgery. Very rude and dismissive! Saw him two different times and received two totally different answers! Keep searching if you want a good doctor!

Horrible doctor. Does not spend anytime explaining the procedures or give you the information you need so you can look it up. After waiting over an hour and a half he spent about 2 minutes with me. It's a shame this is the health care you get today.

Dr. Hughes was brilliant in his diagnosis and treatment if my spinal stenosis last Fall. I'd spent two full days in hospital at UCLA with virtually no proper diagnosis or treatment. When I got back to Alexandria and was able to see Dr. Hughes, he was able to immediately diagnose the problem and arranged emergency surgery. Within two days i was walking and on the road to recovery. He was compassionate, thorough, and very focused on providing expert treatment and follow up.

I had spinal surgery performed by Dr. Hughes mid-December 2016. The diagnosis, surgery, and recovery went extremely well. Don't be put off by reviews that complain about non-surgery things. The wait time varies, to be sure. D. Hughes spends enough time with his patients to make sure that they understand why he recommends surgery, or not. He seems genuinely interested in avoiding surgery if possible. Surgery is scary, and I think he will spend extra time with patients who need that extra time.
