a family favorite – When my two eldest children (ages 18 and 20) are deciding on where we should go out to eat, they always choose Sin Ju. Even my 16 year-old, non-sushi-eating son is enamoured of the place. The sushi is the best in town. The tatami rooms are a great treat. The atmosphere overall is beautiful and calming.
A really bad experience – What do you think a $9.95 "summer roll" would have in it? Rice? Well, when the roll came and it had no rice, I was surprised but tried it (1 pc). It was terrible. I tried to send it back but they wouldn't take it. The owner came out and asked if everything was okay. I said "no" and explained that I thought the sushi would have rice in it and that I didn't like it. She said (with a smile), "Well, you have already eaten it so that is too bad." I'll never go back. Bad food, bad service. Not to mention ... read more
Complete lack of Service – We decided to go for our aniversary. When we made reservations, we asked for a tatmi room and were told there shouldn't be a problem. Having lived in Japan, I was quite excited. When we arrived, 4 of the tatami rooms were open. We were seated at a table behind a some loud Japanese businessmen. I asked if we could sit in one of the tatami rooms since it was our aniversary. The host replied that they were for parties of 5 or more and they were all full anyway. After discussing it, I politely told the... read more
Quite an experience! – Looking for a quiet intimate dinning experience? Try one of the tatami rooms, you'll enjoy a truly remarkable experience. The menu is varied, the sushi is fresh, and the service is great. A nice place for romance or a dinner with good friends.
Good Deal – Great food at a really good price. The service was superb and the atmosphere was comfortable and friendly.
More than sushi – If you don't try the sukiyaki or shabu-shabu that's cooked on your table, you're missing a delightful experience, especially if served in one of the tatami rooms. Skip the pre-cooked sukiyaki; you can get that anywhere.
LOVE IT! – I should give a bad review to keep other people away from this new spot I've found -- I don't want it to get too crowded! But -- they really do deserve accolades. I've tried all "the best sushi in Portland" places from Hillsboro to Lake Oswego -- I was not impressed with any of 'em. This place is great. Fresh fish, great portions, reasonable prices, outstanding service, friendly sushi chefs, private tatami rooms, beautiful ambiance, great selection of saki -- it's all here.
Best sushi I've had in a long time... – I lived in Japan for 1 year. I'm not an expert on Japanese food, but I know good Japanese food when I see and taste it. The sushi at Sin Ju is the best I've had in a long time and certainly the best I've had in Oregon. The rainbow roll is a must have. And the tempura is heavenly. We received great service and were thrilled to get out of there for a total of $50 for two. The only disappointment was the very limited dessert menu.
Used to be good – I've been to Sin Ju about 10 times and it was a really good place for fresh sushi, but my last 2 experiences have been unforgivable. This last time the service was horrible (they lost half our order, never checked in with our table once and as a finale asked why we didn't finish the yellowtail - it didn't taste fresh - and then didn't offer any apology for the poor service or food. I won't be back.
