About this business

Come enjoy her beauty and dream of her rich past . . . Located on the Mississippi River between the historic Louisiana cities of New Orleans and Baton Rouge, Oak Alley Plantation has been called the "Grande Dame of the Great River Road". Nowhere else in the south will you find such a spectacular setting! The quarter-mile canopy of giant live oak trees, believed to be nearly 300 years old, forms an impressive avenue leading to the classic Greek-revival style antebellum home. The guided tour of the “Big house exhibit” was a huge deception. The location is gorgeous but it’s a shame that we are not allowed to take pictures inside the premises. I don’t think that this rule was set to protect some old furnitures or artefacts ! The tour lasted less than 40minutes and did not teach us anything about history or slavery. I loved the tour. It was a little shorter than I thought it would be, but it was still as informative as it could be about the family, the house, and the slaves in the time allotted. As much as it would have been cool to have had the guides in period dress, as many have stated in previous reviews, I'm sure that there are financial and statistical costs that go into continuing that, and, quite frankly, it's extremely hot in the summer months. The grounds are magnificent and I loved taking photos there.

This is the most spectacular place in the United States. For those of you who have never been there, you are missing a treasure. The neatest part is that the trees were planted a hundred years before the house -- what insight !!
