This is a really special place that has lots of great stories attached to it. We managed to be there at a time where we could go on a guided tour where we found out lots of facts, stories and were able to ask any questions. The philosophy of the workhouse is explained well and really makes you think about not only the conditions of life there, but the alternatives that were/weren't available. Something a bit different for a national trust place. It was interesting to see the inside of a Victorian workhouse. It also has the infirmary which was a nice little extra. Will definitely be coming back.
A very interesting insight into what it was like to live in a time when there was no safety net for the extremely poor or for people who had suffered misfortune or lived with mental or physical illness. A complete change from all the wonderful stately homes owned by the National Trust. A powerful reminder of how far we've come in terms of social care.
Great place to learn about work house. Kids love exploring and playing games.
