We toured with young children, 9, 4 and 13 months. The older two did well, our oldest especially found it interesting. The baby started to realize he liked the echo of his newfound voice with the vaulted ceilings and skylights though. So, although the tour guide seemed to be the only one annoyed, most others were smiling at the baby and enjoying his giggles. However, I was prompted to take my baby and try and join a tour group ahead of ours on our way out. Luckily another tour guide kindly offered to show me rooms and some s... read more
We toured the main portion of the house, the basement, the slave quarters, and Jefferson's grave. Our guide was excellent; very knowledgeable and able to answer all questions. I really appreciated that Jefferson's history as a slave owner was not overlooked or brushed aside, but was presented as part of who he was. History can be complicated; the staff did a good job of discussing the facts.
A visit to Monticello was on our list for a long time and it did not disappoint! What an amazing man, life long learner and gifted man. The Presidency was the least of his accomplishments. His home was s reflection of his pursuit of happiness! A great day to learn and discover history and the man.
We came away feeling a sadness for Jefferson. I think that the docent on the house tour could do a better job sharing the great accomplishments of Jefferson over his lifetime and his contributions to American democracy..certainly deserves more than a mention that he was the author of the declaration of independence. His impressive enlightenment education and world view deserved more we thought.
Awesome place, only complaint is that the $25 blanket entrance fee seemed too high.
Great experience, well thought out and much more to see than I was expecting. Great family atmosphere and a little something for everyone
Incredibly humbling to walk in a home of one of our country's founding fathers. The house shows how he was a visionary. And yet, even so, the issue of slavery was so problematic. It is indicative of our history and shows that we still need healing from the sins of our country's past.
I was speechless I couldn't even speak the beauty of the property and the historic symbol of our country speaking out to all families about our history
My husband, kids and I went yesterday. We thoroughly enjoyed the visit! Our tour guide was very informative!
