interesting joint – Had reservations for a party of 2 and had to wait 20 minutes, not a big deal though. This is a cool, funky place, but for some reason the S.F./NYC vibe just doesnt work in L.A, I just wouldnt smash so many people in one area of space. It's not a sports bar, so if you're gonna have music---I think downtempo, dubby, triphop would be fitting for an *urban* place like that rather than Kool and the Gang, etc, etc, lol. GOOD prices. Hard to find places in L.A. that arent a fortune for an excellent meal. The goa... read more
skimpy drinks – As a native San Franciscan, I love this home away from home. As a fan of the old Lucky Duck, I'm glad to see a great restaurant move into my neighborhood. BUT, when you get a martini and the glass comes half full, and the sidecar when poured in doesn't even fill the glass, something feels distincly LA about that. Granted, the drinks are more generous when ordered from the bar, if you can get to it. Don't leave without ordering the s'mores.
a wonderful find in LA – I hate how pretentious LA dining has become, and this place totally gets highest marks for its unpretentiousness...I got great service from the hostesses and the waitress, had no problems with my reservations, even though i was 15 minutes late (however, I must admit that I ate there on a weekday). I was lucky to get a booth, where it was very cozy for me and my boyfriend. The mojitos and sangrias are absolutely amazing....the sangria was the best I've ever had in LA, and very comparable to those in S... read more
Know what to order! – Well, the Thursday Night Dinner Club traveled to this much talked about place. It was a night of hits and misses. The hits were the goat cheese fondue appetizer, the risotto, and the pork cutlet dinner plate (Americanized tonkatsu). The misses were the pot-au-feu, the Huckleberry Cobbler (Hillmont makes a similar dessert much better.), and yes, the smores. The choclate used was wonderful, but the crackers and marshmallow were not. Good service, wonderful atmosphere, good prices.
Best food, best mojitos, best service, best place. Welcome to LA
great place!!! – This place is awesome! They have the BEST mojitos I have ever had... great service, cute decor, and reasonable prices. We had the "make your own smores" dessert- messy but very fun! Our waitress was nice too. Also no "Hollywood" attitude!!!!!!
Get ready to wait – We waited for a table for 30 min... even WITH a dinner reservation. It took 20 of those 30 min. just to reach the bar.
A new favorite – Finally, food like SF in LA! Went with my girlfriends for an early dinner (6:30) and had a wonderful time. We were there almost 3 hrs! The sangria's were great, the food...delicious, the smores...to die for, service very friendly.
A gem on La Brea – What a beautiful yet casual space. No trace of The Lucky Duck remains. An open kitchen, nice bar, great menu, and a friendly staff. I started with the pork satay. Different and delicious. The spicy chicken entree was to die for. A must have. My friends were all picking at my plate. The big suprise was the bill. I couldn't believe how affordable! I'll be going back soon.
