Great doctor! I went to Doctor Sumida based on a recommendation from a friend who had knee replacement surgery with him. I’ve only received cortisone shots, but have been able to maintain an active lifestyle. When necessary I will go to Doctor Sumida for knee replacement surgery.
I was able to get an appointment with Dr. Sumida on a Friday afternoon at the last minute thanks to OrthoVirginia’s easy online scheduling. He was efficient in assessing my situation—a very painful knee, recommended a procedure that would help me and then walked me through it step by step. The next day I was pain free and able to move again more normally. I have been to see Dr. Sumida multiple times and am always impressed with his expertise and always have been helped by his care. I highly and unreservedly recommend him.
Seeing Dr. Sumida at OrthoVirginia at the VHC location was one of the best medical visits I've had. I was able to get an appointment within just a few days. I've come to Sumida on various occasions for possible fractures, tendonitis, and arthritis for myself, my children, and my parents. He listens, takes his time to explain the options, and we all trust his diagnosis/judgement. He's not quick to suggest to invasive procedures, but when he does, we know it's serious. Great bedside manners. Almost like a friend, but y'know, still a doctor and obviously very skilled at what he does.
I have been seeing Dr. Sumida for many years and I came to him for a second opinion on something my podiatrist told me— his concerns were spot on. His diagnosis was different than the podiatrist’s and he referred me to another specialist. I should have come to him first. :-)
Dr. Sumida and his team were very helpful despite my being late they were very accommodating and everyone from his front office staff to Dr. Sumida himself his entire team was great. I’m grateful to his team and him for their help and excellent service during my visit for my fractured foot today.

Quickly assessed that I needed the help of another specialist. Personally arranged an appointment with that doctor on very short notice. Knowledgeable, decisive, gets things done. In my brief experience, very impressive.
Dr. Sumida has been taking care of me for the past three to four years and I would not have anyone else prescribe or evaluate my leg but him.
